Is a partition and a dual boot the same thing?
I have a 250GB drive that has all of my apps and OS on it. It has about 32Gb’s left on it. I’m trying to install a copy of Avid Media Composer software and I’ve been told, both on this forum and by Avid, that its best to have separate start ups for FCP and Avid. Or a partition set up for the drive which hold the OS.
So I followed some partition guidelines I found

to walk you through the process and It says after attempting to divide the drive “that their isn’t enough space on the drive”.
Is their a certain amount of space required to divide a drive?

should I be attempting this instead of a partition?

if it is possible get a second drive and set it you as a boot drive for your Avid. That is what I do with one of my machines one drive has FCS 2 and the other is Pro Tools.
Partioning a drive is a solution but not a best case. when you do that you actually loose drive performance.Kent Stipp

after you install the 2nd drive in your computer. make sure you format it in disk utility. after that either use the install/restore disk that came with your computer to put the OS on the new drive OR purchase a new copy of the os and install on the new drive. to differentiate you might want to make sure you give the drive a different name like Media Composer.

I’ll try that Kent. I have a 2nd drive already in the system that I was using to store small projects {media} until I purchased a Raid drive, Do I need to strip it down { reformat] or just load the OS on to it. I fortunately have a 2nd copy of Leopard since I purchased a Mac Box set recently.
Also in the future will I need to select a drive or program when I power up the system?

How does partitioning your hard drive cause you to lose performance? I only ask because I have this setup, with a 750GB drive partitioned into one OS for FCP and another for Media Composer. I haven’t noticed any performance issues, but I haven’t pushed it that hard since setting up the dual boot.

1st if you are going to use the 2nd drive you already have you will need to reformat and that will mean loosing data on that drive. On that note if that is your only “media” drive you need to figure out where you are going to put media. DO you have a 3rd internal or an external you can use for your media?
to address the question on partitoning. As the tech’s explained. your drive generally writes from the inside out. So the main partition is on the inside and each subsequent partition works its was out giving you a lower performance. and with todays computers and drives being so inexpensive it is really just more efficent.
