Capturing Live into Macbook pro FCP without firewire
Posted by Rob Pitman on May 8, 2009 at 10:13 amHi everyone,
I have been asked by my MD to capture a pitch he is doing straight into FCP. I have done this many times before either hardwiring straight to the camera with firewire or by going through a mixing desk with multi-camera live feeds. My issue this time is that I will not be able to be in the room and the camera is roaming so firewire is not only impractical but almost impossible.
How else can I get a live feed into FCP in realtime?
Thanks!

May 8, 2009 at 1:13 pmThanks mate, sorry if I’m being a little slow but how does the signal from the camera get to the IOHD? It’ll most likely be shot on a Digi using obviously digibetcam?

May 8, 2009 at 1:55 pmare you looking to capture real time and be out of the room? If that is truly the case, you need to look at a wireless solution if you don’t want to be tethered with cables.
An easier solution would be to shoot to tape on the camera and then transfer after the eng shoot and then you accomplish your goal. Of course, this solution would require a delay as you would be capturing into FCP after the event and not in real time

May 8, 2009 at 2:13 pmI agree with Jeremy. Mac Book Pro to an IoHD via SDI that will do everything you need.

May 8, 2009 at 2:26 pmYou can use a wireless transmitter and receiver, Trango is one brand, there are others. You can alternately rent a Firestore for each camera that needs to roam, attach that to the roving camera, after the event, you can edit directly off the drive without needing to ingest it into the laptop. The quality there will be better (for the money spent) than the wireless solutions, unless wireless SD is okay for you.

May 8, 2009 at 2:43 pm[Rob Pitman] “Basically, ive got about 10mins to get in, cut, out and loaded onto the web so it needs to be immediate, ie as live!
“Have you looked at Telestream’s “Wirecast”? There’s a forum for it right here on the cow. It will allow you to go live directly to the web. (But you’ll still need to get the signal into the box using the suggestions above.)

May 8, 2009 at 2:48 pmYea, obviously taking from the tape would be ideal but it is the turn around time that is key. Basically, ive got about 10mins to get in, cut, out and loaded onto the web so it needs to be immediate, ie as live!

May 8, 2009 at 4:53 pmFor another cable tethered option that is a tad cheaper than the AJA I/O HD is the Matrox MXO2. You said this is a DIGIBETA camera? That has SDI out. Capture as DVCPRO 50 (DV50) to a firewire drive.
