April 30, 2009 at 8:41 pmSony X1? Do you mean EX1? Using the XDCAM EX format?

April 30, 2009 at 8:58 pmYes, Shane. Apologies for the lack of information, I am new to this format. Any info on what Final Cut version, if any, edits this format? What I have is a 16 Gb SD card full of clips and associated files.
Much thanks,

April 30, 2009 at 9:06 pmShane, I am reading the User MAnual PDF that comes with the card reader (or camera?) and it claims that the driver / codec to import XDCAM EX files works ONLY with FCP 6.01 and above… Is this solid or is there a workaround? I am editing at a facility with only FCP 5.1.4, although the operating system and the quicktime version are up to date.
Thanks,

April 30, 2009 at 9:16 pmI am no expert on that camera, but I do know that you do need FCP 6 to work with that format. FCP 5.1.4 came out years before that camera was invented, so it cannot work with that footage. And the workflow for that footage is to either import natively or to ProRes, and FCP 5.1.4 does not have the ProRes codec…that comes with FCP 6.
I don’t know of any software out there that will convert this format to something that FCP 5.1.4 can work with, like DVCPRO HD (which would be a big quality hit…XDCAM EX is full raster 1920×1080 and DVCPRO HD is 1280×1080, lots of horizontal information lost).
Maybe someone will chime in with a solution…but I think the only solution is to upgrade. This is the issue with working with the newer formats, you need the later versions of the software.

I trust you have the correct opinion on this, so I’ll just throw in my last towell:
I managed to install the driver and capture program (within FCP) on the MAc here, running FCP 5.1.4
The capture window opens, no problem, and I can even see the timecode for each clip. BUT there is no image or sound: this is obviously my problem, right? This is why I can’t use FCP 5.1.4, I assume. I just thought maybe I got lucky with some sort of exception and managed to install the codec/driver/capture program.Do I have any chance or should I be realistic?
thanks for your patience and help!

May 1, 2009 at 12:38 amYour only options are to upgrade to FCS2 or have someone w/FCS2 capture the clips and transcode them into a codec you can work with.

you need the following:
fcp 6.03 (minimum) there is a pro-apps update that has this
osx 10.4.11
sony xdcam software – get it at the sony site.I just upgraded 2 suites to these specs just to handle
a bunch of EX1 footage my DP is providing now. -

May 1, 2009 at 11:24 amthis is the EXACT problem i’ve been dealing with working in FCP 5.4, and conversion work-arounds for someone using FCP 6.3 are not easy. Be nice if i had 3 grand for a new computer.
There is a program called Transfer Tool which apparently works in FCP 5.4 for some XDCam HD clips but not “XDCAM EX” though i haven’t experimented much with it yet.If i may shift gears, i’m curious if any of you feel the new XDCAM EX format is better than Panasonics DVCProHD? Any opinions on that?

in terms of proven reliability, dvcpro-hd wins. it just never has issues.
I have not had any issues with EX but I have not done much. others have
had occasional problems.(working with it in fcp)as far as image quality though EX wins for sure. its full raster and
that beats dvcpro-hd right off the bat.I used an EX for some b-roll on a RED project and it matched it perfectly.
