Mixing apple prores 422 and DV pal on timelines
Hi,
This is an issue caused by my own errors but one that others may come across so any advice would be most welcome.
I have filmed a project in two formats, DVCam and Digibeta (PAL).
I have compressed the digiBeta through my Kona LHe as apple prores 422 (HQ) at 625 25.
I have captured the DVCam through firewire as normal.
I now have a problem on my timeline. If I choose a DV timeline (2/3 of my material) I get choppy results when I render prores shots at altered speeds.
If I opt for the prores timeline, my DV looks juddery when rendered on altered speeds.
I monitor output through an MXO onto a cinema display.
What am I doing wrong? (did I do anything right?)
If this is a field issue, at what point can I avoid or remedy it?Please, all thoughts welcome.

I would have captured your DV to ProRes through the Kona board.

Fair point Walter. I did not do that because while I have a digibeta deck I don’t have a decent dvcam deck. Only one with FireWire and phono type component outs. I know I can capture hdv to prores thanks to the kona but is it actually possible to take in dv as prores like that too? And I assume by what you’re saying prores and DV don’t mix?

Hi Adrian,
When you drop the ProRess (upper) in the DV sequence (Lower), is FC setting the “Shift-fields” filter?
And why you go to edit in a DV sequence?
Will you crunch all the DigiBeta footage to DV?
No good business.
I agree with Walter: If you can capture the DV footage via Kona.
Not only because will be easier to deal only with a single kind of footage, also because is the best way to bring your 420 DV footage to 422.
Get any camera or DV VTR and plug it to the Kona.
I don’t know the Kona connexions (I have an ioHD), but if it have S-Video IN, use it.
If not by Composite.

If your DV deck has component outs, get some adapters and hook the LH up and capture that way.

You can capture you DV footage to ProRes 422 thru firewire. we do it all the time with DV and HDV so that we can edit more smoothly. Its far better than dealing with the issues you are seeing.

Right, thanks guys. So the general thinking is that I should get to prores with my DVCam. The only divergence seems to come about when looking at how I capture. Rafael and Chris suggest ways which lose timecode if I read them right. However Wayne suggests DV can be captured to prores in the way HDV can be, thru firewire…

Do search for a tutorial on hdv to prores. This will give you a starting point. You’ll have create an Easy Setup for capturing dv to prores. It can be done.

Thanks for all this. I should explain that when aja made a song and dance about capturing and converting HDV to prores through firewire I assumed DV could not be captured this way… and was led down a dark alley of firewire capture anyway.
However, of course I was not thinking broadly enough around the problem. So with a combination of the above help I have taken a component feed from the DV player and used a capture preset that uses Firewire to control the deck and the kona card to capture analog video through the component. Audio is taken as a feed from the deck through the desk and then into the Kona card analog in.
Thanks for the guidance. A classic example of a knowledge gap being so wide that I did not understand the easy steps being offered. Perhaps my entry will provide other clueless people to bridge the gap.
The real fun begins, as I try to match the digibeta look with my DVCAM footage….
