Doing a short edit on my macbook and just trued exporting a v short HDV clip (10 secs) to check that my workflow/codec setup was good. Got an insufficient disk space error message though – there was over 1GB of space on my HD. Any thoughts on wheher there is a bare minimum required to do any rendering/exporting, or why this might have happened?

    Many thanks,

    James

    Hi james,
I guess you are exporting to an external HD
Normally is recommended to let at least (least-least) a 10% of the HD free.

    Thanks for the advice.

I am using the HD on the MacBook this time though (I was trying to streamline the amount of kit I lugged to the job). Should that make any difference?

    Thank again,

    James

    Hi James,
    That makes the things worst.
Apart of room to write your render files, your System needs few GBs free to work properly.
There is something call “Virtual Memory”. The system use the HD to write many temporal data.
Open the Activity Monitor and click the “System memory” tab.
    Look the VM Size.
In my MBP I have now (no FC or any other big application open) 38 Gbs.
That’s the minimum free space I let in my System HD.

Wow, thanks Rafael – that makes sense and explains what was going on.
