Strange Mini-DV pixellation issue – Please help!
I am having a very strange pixellation issue when i digitize footage from a Panasonic mini-DV tape.

As you can see the resolution looks really low. But I don’t see how that could be it, as it was captured Firewire. I also understand that it was shot in a very low light situation, but that would just create more noise right? This pixellation makes no sense to me. Please take a look above… I could really use some help as I have the client coming over tomorrow.

thats a typical problem with full RED spectrum in DV video.
Pure Red suffers the worst.the only option to get around that if it seems to play ok
from the deck to the monitor is to capture it as ProRes over firewire. -
Hmm… I have a mini-DV tape and a mini-DV deck and camera- capturing as ProRes requires HDV does it not?

That sort of pixelation in red is fairly typical of DV. I use Nattress chroma smoothing and sharpen plugin to clean that up. It won’t be perfect but it will help a lot.
Also a bit of 3 WAY CC will help, particulalry reducing the saturation as well as pulling the balance away from red.

Absolutely. The DV pixelation is much more noticeable in a saturated red.
As Michael wisely points, the “Nattress Chroma Smooth/Sharpen” and a 422 codec in your sequence will help with the pixelation.
You may end up using that filter for all your DV footage. Even if doesn’t shows such a pixelation.
