MPEG2 Compression Settings in Compressor
I just got some requirements for a satellite uplink (“The NewsMarket”) and would appreciate some guidance. I looked in the MPEG2 setting of Compressor, which doesn’t seem to allow me to customize the settings in the Inspector. It basically says it takes the settings from the original video file. But in FCP, Sequence Settings don’t seem to get to this level of detail either, particularly for items like bit rate.
Here are the recommended settings from TMN. My question: how do I get there?
NTSC MPEG2 Program Stream Settings
audio: MPEG-1 layer II
sample rate: 48 kHz
bit rate: 384 kbps
format: stereovideo: MPEG-2
NTSC 4:3, 720×480, 29.97 NTSC
interlaced, bottom first
bit rate: 8 Mbps normal action, 12 Mbps high motion
bitrate control: constant bit rate

Hi Bob,
You need to duplicate the Preset, then you can modify it with your specs.

Thanks Rafael. I’d seen that before but I’d completely forgotten. Three remaining issues, perhaps non-issues:
Audio bit rate; recommended is 384 kbps, but I can’t find any reference to audio data rate inside Compressor’s MPEG2 settings or FCP. Probably not a big deal.
I can’t hear any audio when I try to play the MPEG2 files in FCP. Is that anything to be concerned about? (I can hear the audio when I use Quicktime Player & MPEG Streamclip.)
GOP Pattern: I can find something close in Compressor but it isn’t identical to the specs.
Specs: IPBBPBBPBP …/15
Compressor (closest is GOP Structure IBBP: Closed): IBBPBBPBBPBBPBPAm I making a mountain out of a molehill here?

Right. In Compressor you can not set the audio data-rate when you use MP2 audio.
I think the default data-rate is around 224 Kbps.
You have an easy solution: ffmpegX.
You can make your .m2v in Compressor and your MP2 audio in ffmpegx. Thene you just need to mux them with ffmpegX.[Bob Cole] “I can’t hear any audio when I try to play the MPEG2 files in FCP. FC works with QT movies. MPEGs are not. FC can play some flavors, but can not with some others.

The GOPs patterns are different.
But there is something that I don’t like in the structure they ask you.
I think that a Closed/long GOP structure should start with an “I” frame fallowed by an “B” frame instead of a “P” frame.

i was having the same issues as far as getting a full either 720x 480 or 720×486 mpeg2 program stream. did you actually find a wayto alter the settings in compressor?I am cutting footage from a sony EX3 720 60P and delivering in SD

Hello guys,
you both don’t need to use workflow through the FfmpegX… First of all – default bitrate for MP2 Audio in Compressor 3 is 384kbps, but this can be changed in custom profile settings. I do not know why Apple still haven’t implemented the option to change the bitrate in Compressor’s GUI, so you have to change it through the profile’s file.
In your directory /user/Library/Application Support/Compressor/ there are custom profiles as .setting files. Simply open it in Textedit and change the following setting
