SONY HDV deck-HVR M 15U deck
Posted by Takashi Sakurai on April 15, 2009 at 6:13 pmHi all,
I have SONY HVR M 15U deck that sat without ever being used. When connected to FCP 6 station, it doesn’t work at all. SONY wants $700 to examine the deck. Is there anybody out there who knows of places that can trouble shoot this deck? I live in Alaska, and the geographical distance from the daily convenience to near by stores is the issue.
Thanks

April 15, 2009 at 7:04 pmCould be a number of things as others will likely say also. What comes quick to mind is,
Is your easy setup correct? DV NTSC
I use an HVR 25U that plays HDV. I believe the 15U does not. Don’t know what you are trying to ingest.
Is there a remote switch on the face of the deck?
Is the problem that you can digitize from the camera, but not the deck?Victor

Thank you so much.
The deck turns on. It plays back both HDV and SD footage on the studio monitor, but FCP doesn’t recognize the deck. FCP, however, recognizes when a cemra is connected via firewire. I replaced firewire cable, but the same result.
In FCP, Easy setup is correct, and I am trying to get HDV footage into FCP using 15U.
I began to think the firewire port on the back of the deck might be the problem.
Any suggestions?

Thank you so much.
Easy setup is correct, and I am trying to get HDV footage into FCP using 15U. When the station is connected to camera via firewire, it works, but not with 15U. There is no remote/local switch.
I began to think the firewire port on the back of the deck might be the problem.
Any suggestions?

One way to check this would be to hook your camera firewire to your deck firewire and see if you get a signal

April 15, 2009 at 8:47 pmOh… That’s easy….
You need to go into the setup menu and turn off iLink. Hit the menu button, go to the double arrows menu (IN/OUT REC). Go down to iLink Set and press EXEC. Now, it will say HDV-DV CONV. Set that to OFF and press EXEC to set it. Select OK, then press the MENU button to finish.
Now FCP will recognize your deck for HDV capture. That’s it! You’ll need to do the reverse for capturing DV or DVCAM footage.

April 16, 2009 at 12:05 amAs Wayne said above and just to clarify… Firewire for DV is different to Firewire of HDV in so much as if you set up to capture HDV in FCP it is looking for a HDV signal. If the 15U deck is switched to ‘downconvert’ (in iLink menu setting) it is essentially converting the HDV to DV and outputting it to the Firewire port as DV – so FCP will not see it if it is looking for HDV.
A quick check is to go to the ‘about this mac – more info’ and look at all the devices that it finds. The deck will show up in the ‘firewire’ section regardless of what the iLink setting is. This will also absolutely prove the firewire deck connection to the Mac.

What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!

June 10, 2009 at 12:49 amHi there Baz:
No idea what time it is there, but if you get this, I’m trying to view my HDV tapes in the Sony HVR-M1OU HDV deck. I’ve done it before but can’t remember how. I’m in the menu and stuck at the Down Converter, Ilink thing. I’ve set the scratch discs to HDV in Final Cut. I’m following your directions above on ‘about this mac – more info’ because i don’t understand about “ilink” settings, keeps saying not allowed, and unplug but unplug what?
I’m a Producer who can edit, but I’m not an Editor! So please send me basic 5 year old simple information. Picture would help too. Not sure which bit I’m missing. Final Cut Pro HD, G5 . Everything working, but don’t usually edit on HDV.
Thanks very much .

June 25, 2009 at 10:50 amCould not get my FCP 6.0.5 to recognize my SONY HDV deck when launched—drove me nuts.
Tried everything–I thought.I discovered that when I went to my applications>Final Cut Pro–and clicked more info….the box
for opening FCP with Rosetta was checked. Dont know why but it was. I unchecked….BINGO. Problem solved!! Im back in biz.
Check your “about Final Cut Pro” more info…make sure that box (open with Rosetta) is unchecked
