  • FCP Dropping Clips…

Posted by Mike Libby on April 13, 2009 at 4:48 pm

I am quite new to FCP and learning its quirks and differences between FCP and Avid.

One thing that I keep having trouble with and cannot find any information on:

When I am working in the timeline, moving/arranging clips with the mouse, FCP often (about 50% of the time) randomly (can’t figure out what I did to make it do this) gets into a mode where, as you are moving a clip, it drops the clip whenever you stop moving the mouse.

This is in contrast to (what I’d consider normal and intuitive operation) where it drops the clip when you release the mouse button. This is especially difficult when you are trying to be precise (and you pause to move the clip in slow) and often cuts into the other clip that I’m trying to move next to.

How do I turn on and turn off this “feature” what do I even call it?
    Thanks
    Mike

    Update:

I just found that it does it with any click-drag operation in the timeline–not just moving clips, but also adjusting the edges of a clip, etc.

    Really Annoying!!!
    Help!

never heard this one….usually fcp doesn’t drop the clip until you release the mouse. There’s also an arrow you should see under the clip on the timeline to tell fcp how to drop the clip in reference to other clips that might already be on your timeline.

Alternately, you can drag the clip to your sequence window…and get some options on where and how to insert the clip in the timeline. Try that?

    Good luck!

This is not normal behavior for FCP. Are you by any chance using an Apple Mighty Mouse? The MM has side buttons that react to “squeezing the mouse. If those buttons are not disabled in System Settings, they can frequently interfere with regular mouse operations if you happen to squeeze the mouse a bit too hard by accident. Aside from that, I’m not sure what could be affecting your dragging and dropping operations.

Yes I am using a mighty mouse–but still happens when I deliberately keep my fingers away from the side buttons.

Good to know that this shouldn’t be happening. It is all very random. In fact, It was doing it–then I popped out to read the last forum message that came over email, and then popped back into FCP and it quit.

Hmmm, I don’t know. Could it be a mouse or OS problem?

I’m wondering if you have “snapping” enabled? Press the “n” key on the keyboard until the snapping feature is turned off and then try moving your clips around.

    Tom,

I’ve tried it with and without the snapping turned on–same situation, though.
