  • Editing videos using FCP for internet review

Posted by Jeff Brewer on April 11, 2009 at 2:07 am

Hello I am a user of FCP 6 and I greatly enjoy the workflow and efficiency. I have recently gotten an online editing job and the company has graciously allowed me to work from home. I am now in need of a solution that will allow me to perform rough edits and then post them online for their reviewing.

I have tried file sharing via my mac, but the upload rate of my broadband is far too slow for this and a newer, faster connection is not feasible. I also am aware of the upload sites and services such as mobileme, but these services require upload and download times, which will prohibit me from performing quick fixes while in conference calls or online meetings. The only option I can currently think of is uploading a highly compressed, low quality cut for review, which will still take time to download and upload.

Has anyone found a solution that is cost worthy for this problem? Any help is appreciated.

We do this all day, every day using H.264 compressed Quicktime movies.

Anywhere from 3 to 150MB files are created from our HD originals. We don’t even have to burn in TC since Quicktime Player 7 now reads TC right off the video track. We generally upload 640×360 files with the audio cut way down to 22khz to make the files smaller.

Been doing this workflow going on three years now with a client in Colorado (we’re in Atlanta) and clients pretty much all over the country. I use Media Batch from CineSoft to provide all the front end, but you could use MobileMe or any FTP service.

This is exactly what i do as well for clients both out of town, and even in town clients like the ease of just DL’ing a small QT movie to save them or I a trip across town.

As walter suggested I use my MobileMe account to distribute.

I have also set up gmail accounts for some clients for this purpose. Gmail allows attachments up to 20MB which is typically more than enough to send segments and receive gfx files and such.

    Be careful with MobileMe.

It’s not intended for commercial use…they have a monthly bandwith allotment. If you go over, they freeze your account. Doesn’t sound like with what you are doing, you will hit the limit, but here’s the lowdown…

    Understanding MobileMe data transfer limits

    Support
“Data transfer,” or bandwidth used, is the amount of information moved to and from a site as visitors access it. MobileMe monitors the data transfer of each MobileMe account in order to ensure a high level of performance for all MobileMe subscribers. When you purchase a MobileMe subscription, you receive 20 gigabytes (GB) of storage and up to 200 GB of data transfer capacity per month.

For example, if you publish a 50 megabyte (MB) movie to a MobileMe website, and 10 of your friends view it, 500 MB of your allotted data transfer quota is used.

You can use up to half of your monthly quota during the first 15 days of a month. (If you’re close to exceeding your monthly data transfer limit, you receive a message from the MobileMe team.) If you exceed your data transfer limit, any shared files, websites, blogs, or podcasts associated with your MobileMe account are turned off and service is not reinstated until the 1st or 16th of the month (Pacific Standard Time), whichever comes first.

Member data transfer limits are determined by the amount of MobileMe storage you have. To avoid exceeding your data transfer limit, you can:

Increase your monthly data transfer limit (up to 400 GB or 600 GB per month) by adding more storage space to your account

Compress or remove videos and podcasts from your websites. You can also encourage visitors to download your videos or podcasts rather than visit the site repeatedly to view the same content.

Password-protect your Gallery or other websites to limit page views to those who know the password

You can monitor your data transfer history by clicking the Details link in the Account Details section (in the Summary pane).
