  • Converting finished FCP/DVD Studio project to PAL

A client has just requested that I convert an NTSC DVD to PAL. I created the DVD by exporting a feature film and extras from timelines in Final Cut Pro to DVD Studio Pro. I’m assuming I will have to create a new PAL timeline for each video in Final Cut Pro, export, and then set up and re-build the project in PAL format in DVD Studio Pro. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this? Do I need to export full res NTSC QT videos and then import them back into FCP with a PAL set up?

    Thanks,

    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,
You need to convert the NTSC QT clips to PAL.
The best options are Compressor or the Nattress Standard Conversion filter.
Once you have the PAL QT movies you need to convert them in PAL MPEG-2.
Don’t forget to tell your client that in PAL-land DVD players can play NTSC DVDs too.

Thanks. And just curious… why couldn’t I just convert the MPEG-2 directly to PAL?

Is that true? PAL DVD players will play NTSC discs? I’ve just finished a film about Nepal and need to send it to a friend there and was pretty sure I needed to pay to have a PAL disc conversion or do it myself in FCP/Compressor/DVD Studio, but if it’s not required that would be awesome. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

If that’s not the case, does anyone have any thoughts on the best workflow to take a Final Cut Pro sequence that’s going to DVD Studio and set it up so it will look as good as possible in PAL? The sequence is currently in HDV NTSC.
    Thanks a ton.
