  Exporting Alpha Channel

  I’m exporting a green screened element from FCP to Motion and want to be able to drop elements behind it.

  Question: What format/settings to do I need to use in my exporting from FCP to get the desired effect?

  Have you tried Send to Motion. Or you could try exporting using the Animation codec (that has an alpha channel). I’ve never done this as I’d do the key in Motion. The keyer there is much better than FCP’s.

  Actually, yes I did try that. I tried that first in fact and was happier with the keying in FCP. Primatte is an excellent matting tool but not quite what I needed.

  You can export with the Animation codec but the clip must NOT be rendered.

  If you render, the export draws on the render file, which of course is composited with the background…so your alpha will not be preserved.

  Remove the background….leave un-rendered. Export using the Animation codec (millions +)
