  • From 720 24pn to DVCPRO via Kona 3?

Posted by Jim Carswell on March 30, 2009 at 2:52 pm

I am starting a project I would like to shoot on P2 in 720 24pn. I need to deliver it on standard def DVCPRO tape. I’m shooting HD in order to future proof the video. I have a Kona 3 card and plan to down convert using the card’s center punch to a DVCPRO deck via SDI. All of the local stations are still 4:3 and of course 60i. When I make the down conversion will the DVCPRO deck record it as 60i without impacting the video? Or is there something I need to do in the process to make sure that happens?

This is the first time I’ve had to down convert to a 4:3/60i spec and am a little lost.

    Thanks for the help.

[Jim Carswell] “When I make the down conversion will the DVCPRO deck record it as 60i without impacting the video?”

I don’t know exactly what you mean by impact, but it will work well and lots of people do this all the time.

The kona card will down convert and add pulldown to your video to get it to SD 29.97. So, it will impact it by adding pulldown, but it won’t reduce the quality (other than the inherent HD to SD conversion).

    Jeremy,
That’s just the info I was looking for. I was wondering about adding the proper pulldown for 29.97.
    Thanks so much.

The Kona will do it. Do you know how to do a down convert on the Kona?

No, I have not done this before. I am assuming I would go into the Kona control panel and select the out as being SDI SD out with and chose the center punch option. At least I think that’s what it’s called. I’m away from my computer right now so I can’t check to make sure. I was also going to double check my operating instructions for guidance as well. Is it more complicated than what I have stated?

No, it’s pretty easy. The trick is to use the Kona Control panel for the down convert and not the FCP video output. Sometimes people get confused. Leave FCP in the 720p24 setting you have chosen and then switch whatever output you need (SDI 1, 2 or analog) to the secondary output and make sure the secondary setting is set for 525i29.97. You should then see a down convert icon on the video output. you can then click on that icon to bring you to the conversion options (anamorphic, letterbox, etc) from which you will want to choose ‘Crop’ from the “Down:” list. That will perform a center cut.
