March 28, 2009 at 2:13 pmFCP editing is very similar to FCE editing. The 101 class is a three-day introductory class. I’ll be honest with you, unless the instructor teach to the test, the FCP101 class is not sufficient to pass the Level 1 end user certification, especially if you are a new user. You need to know the Diana Weynand book cold. You really need the five-day 201 class, and you need to study the book carefully to have success on the first pass.
All the best,
Tom

March 28, 2009 at 2:43 pmNot sure about the class, but I will say that being “FCP Certified” is not something required to edit in Final Cut Pro or get a job.
It means you can push the buttons and operate the software the way Apple wants you to so you can be an “official certified trainer” to other people. It does not mean you know how to actually edit a story which to employers like me is far more important. I honestly don’t even care if you know how to use Final Cut Pro because it’s just a tool and I can teach anyone how to use it. I care more about the person actually knowing how to tell a story.
You can’t learn that in FCP 101 or 201. So if you’re planning to teach other people how to use FCP, by all means take the class. If you’re looking to get a leg up on others in the job field, not sure it’s going to accomplish that goal.

March 28, 2009 at 4:02 pmAs many times as you like. The test costs I think something like $150 each time you take it, and you have to wait one week before you can take the test again.
All the best,

March 28, 2009 at 5:43 pmNick,
I took the 201 class last June and I can tell you that I’m much happier I took that over the 101 class. There’s a lot on that test, and certification requires an 80% pass. It’s pretty hardcore. And yeah, if you know the FCP 6 book nearly off by heart, you should be fine, but I don’t know that the 101 class teaches you everything. I pretty much locked myself in my hotel room when I wasn’t in the classroom and managed to pull an 88%.
But, being certified won’t necessarily get you a job. You’ll know how the program works, but that’s about it.
Enjoy though, I had a blast. Just make sure to study study study…

March 28, 2009 at 9:39 pmI think what are worth there wait in gold, are the books. THere are 3 for FCP6, first 2 are how to use FCP and the last one is editing theory. I think every one FCP user should get at least the first 2 books (would reduce the number of post on the Cow by 50%). These books are available on https://www.peachpit.com/store/browse.aspx?st=60884 and Amazon and you can normally save 30-35% off retail, which puts them under $35 each. These are the books for the classes.
Them classes are as good as the effort you put into them. Are they a good value, yes, especially if someone else is paying for them (as well as the expensive). But you can get all you get out of the classes by reading and studying the books by yourself. But some people learn better in a classroom and being able to get around the software can make it all worth it.
One thing to remember a test simple shows what you knew in the past, not what you know now. If you don’t use the program on a regular basis afterwards most of the knowledge is lost, even if you become “Apple Certified”

March 31, 2009 at 3:07 pmHaving spent most of this decade working as an editor to some degree or other on everything from Speed Razor to Avid, i recently took both the 101 and 300 courses. Even with a lot of edit time and quite a bit of time spent on FCP, 101 is a lot of course for 3 short days.
Luckily, i had a really good instructor in Chris Roberts at the NTI in Birmingham (UK). As he also frequently works as an editor he approached the course from that angle, not only covering the contents of the course but the practical and real world reasons behind them. The course was still tough though as there is a huge amount of facts and figures to learn and more short cuts than you think your brain can cope with- your head will feel like it’s about to pop by day 3.
What i have found is that lots of that data and those short cuts have stuck in my brain and become almost automatic while editing. My work process has improved and i feel much more comfortable with the software, I really don’t want to edit on Avid ever again please!
Like the other posts have mentioned, you won’t learn how to edit, that’s a skill that is much harder to learn, but you should have a much better knowledge of how the drive the software.superflyfilms.co.uk
