  • Will play in Viewer/ Not in Timeline

I just bought a new iMac 1.8Ghz, 160GB, 1GB W/ Final Cut Pro. I am loading images from a MinoHD – 720p30. The video files load and play in the viewer just fine. Then I drag and drop them into the timeline and get a message that “rendering was successful”, but when I try to play from timeline, I get a message that “one or more frames were dropped during playback”. Does it make sense that it can play in viewer, but not in timeline? It suggests that I start turning things off, lowering my compression data rate (which I can’t seem to figure out how to do and am guessing means diminishing the images), or upping the speed of my system. Any ideas on where I start to solve?

FCP doesn’t edit H264 natively. You need to convert the files to a codec that FCP can edit with to avoid rendering.

In your scratch disk setup, where are the video files stored? If they are on the internal drive with the OS and FCP software, then that is the likely cause of frames being dropped. Also you didn’t say what your sequence settings are. All this info will help us better guess the problem.

How & where can I do correct codec conversion?

Yes, files are stored on internal drive.

I don’t know what sequence settings you are asking about, or referring to.

You should start reading about this application. We can’t hand-hold you through the absolutely most basic terminology of its use. 1G of RAM is not going to cut it with FCP. That’s not even the minimum recommended amount.

    All the best,

    Hi Tom,

    Actually apple says:

Final Cut Studio 2 System Requirements
Minimum Requirements to Install All Final Cut Studio Applications

A Macintosh computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, or Intel Xeon processor

    1GB of RAM

I’m sure that you are right and only 1 gig will be inadequate for many tasks. However, I do have a question about this. I have a FCP system at home and need to capture some footage at work that I can later edit. The only Mac available is an IMac with 1 gig of ram. I would use my own external drive so I can take it home with me. The footage is standard DV. Though I imagine in the future it will be HDV which I hope to capture apple prores. Doubt that would work. But what do you think of standard DV? Any advice?

    Thanks.
