I am using Automatic Duck to import an OMF back into FCP so I can make some final picture tweaks.

Long and the short of it is that my production audio had this low level interference somewhere that caused a loud POP on every cut. EVERY cut. The mixer had to do some pro tools fades to alleviate them, but it was long and tedious on every edit.

As we know, final cut pro and duck treat Pro Tools fades as new regions, so I have a crap load of new assets on the import and it is choking my system. Can’t move without getting the wonderfully informative “out of memory” error. My thought is this:

If I make all the media from the OMF import offline, cut my picture and then export an OMF, will the mixer be able to connect to the media which he has locally and “connect” the edits? It should work just like an XML or EDL, correct?

Hmmmm…on second thought, maybe not. Unlike Pro Tools, FCP doesn’t seem to have the ability to make a non embedded OMF…

Why reimport an OMF and make it offline? Don’t you have the original project file?

Make the changes to the original sequence than then use something like Editrace to make a change list from the orignal and new EDLs. Make the changes to the Protools project and don’t muck around with reimporting and then re exporting. In short the process of relinking will be a nightmare. The normal way to make changes after sound post has started is by comparing EDL’s or just writing down exactly what you have changed and making a new reference picture QT.
