Set up one to work with another
Posted by Tom Morrow on March 19, 2009 at 9:08 pmI am editing for a cable system using FCP. The work load is beyond the capability of one editor so we got another computer with FCExpress to enable other staff to do some preliminary editing then transport their work to my system for the final edit.
I am having trouble getting the new computer set up even to be able to see video, it is claiming it can not get acces to the codeck.
I can not even play the video on quick time. These are .mov files I processed on the main editing computer.
I know I have a lot to learn and figure out to get all the answers here, so in addition to an answer is there a best place to go to for support to get this working?

March 19, 2009 at 9:16 pmFCE is extremely limited on the codecs it can edit with. “.mov” is not the codec, DV, DVCPro50, DVCProHD, ProRes, HDV, and the like are the codecs. .mov just means it has a QT wrapper.
What codec do you capture your footage to and what is your normal Seq. preset in FCP

March 19, 2009 at 9:19 pmWhat format are you working with? FCExpress only works with DV and HDV.

March 19, 2009 at 9:53 pmCan the project files even be transfered from FCE to FCP? I know FCP 6.0.5 projects are not compatible with FCP 6.0.1. Just wondering. How will one know that everything done on FCE will properly transfer to FCP. Put deadlines into the mix and the idea does not seem too good to me.
just a thought.

March 19, 2009 at 10:06 pmI am not capturing any video We shoot everything to hard drive and transfer files. I am seeing presets in my FCP as HDV-720p30
I am using two different JVC cameras. The consumer model is a GZ-HD7U and I convert its files with Stream Clip to Apple DVCPRO 720p60 or Apple DVCPRO 1080i60
The other camera is a JVC GY-HD110 recording on an external hard drive to MOV format that transfers direct to the mac and drops into FCP
The files from this camera are 1280 x 720I process out with Compressor to send to our broadcast server mpeg2 files
720 x 404
I do not know if any of this is the best thing to be doing. I am just doing it the way the guy I replaced had it set up and editing as fast as I can.

March 19, 2009 at 10:11 pmThat is a good question too. My FCP is version 6.0.3
The FCE is brand new so I assume it is the latest version.I am hoping that the project files will transfer.

March 19, 2009 at 10:15 pmWell, FCExpress will not work with DVCPRO HD at all. And you are mixing DVCPRO HD and HDV. Not the best solution. Best to have the formats match exactly.
And FCExpress and FCPro are not like Avid Express and Avid media Composer. FCE is very limited in what it can do, and you cannot swap project files back and forth.
Best to have TWO FCP stations…and import the HD7U files as HDV…or convert the other HDV files to DVCPRO HD.

March 19, 2009 at 10:30 pmThat is not good news.
I have had some trouble if i need to mix footage or graphics from one project to another or in the same project.
What would look best when it all comes out in the end. Usually I stick with one camera footage or the other to do a show. I know I will have to mix them up one of these days.
I am really lost if i need to bring in some old footage from some other video source.

March 19, 2009 at 10:46 pmIs there a way to get any “lite” version of FCP? or a second licence a for a corporate user that is a bit less expensive?

March 19, 2009 at 11:00 pmThere is no LITE version of FCP. Well, there is but that is FCE. But you cannot work between the two. If you want to share projects and media…you need two copies of FCP.

March 20, 2009 at 1:43 pmI am looking through Mac software. I see a product called Final cut Server for $999 Loks like this would be the same price as returning the FCE and buying FC Studio.
Is there a FCP without the studio? We will most likely be doing rough editing on the second Mac and could get by without the peripherals.
