  • Output brightness problem – FCP/Compressor

    Hi,

Here’s my workflow and the problem I have:

Workflow: I do all the editing in FCP, send the project to Color for grading, get it back for final tuning. Export using Compressor. I want to export for DVD and as a .MOV file. When I export to DVD with Compressor with available settings as the result I get a same picture I had in FCP or Color, i.e. no changes, just like I wanted.

Problem: When I export with Compressor (of FCP) as a .MOV file (I used H.246 and ProRess codecs) I considerably bright picture, which subsequently introduces unwanted bright shadows (and noise).

Questions: 1. what am I doing wrong?, 2. What do you guys suggest to do to avoid such problem?

    Thank you in advance.

You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s a well known, and very frustrating problem. Do a search for “gamma shift H.264” in this and other forums and you’ll get hundreds of hits, and a few workarounds.
Nothing seems to work in all situations though (maybe using the x.264 codec instead of H.264, do a search for that too).
