Live Type Text and DV PAL problem!
Hi ,
I’ve been up and down the forum but I can’t find an answer to my problem! I’m using the latest version of FCP and regularly edit using footage captured from my HD XDCAM F335 camera – using Live Type with no problems. But, now I’m editing some family footage taken on a Sony DCR-PC330E PAL mini DV camera and can’t get clear titles on the timeline!
The titles don’t appear sharp and try as I may, I’m not getting anywhere fast! I’m using Live Type version 2.1.3 and my play-out monitor is a 23″ Apple monitor attached to an MXO box.
I’ve tried adjusting the settings in LT to mirror the Sequence Settings in FCP but the text isn’t sharp! I’ve saved the project in LT, imported the file into FCP and then rendered – still no improvement!
I’ve tried messing around with the Field Dominance settings in the title clip, but I’m changing all of the FCP timeline settings in the process.
Can anyone throw any light on this problem please.

Change your sequence codec to something better than DV: DV50, 8/10b Unc, ProRess, PhotoJPEG75%.
Any of those codecs will make your graphics look better.

Hi Rafael,
Thanks for responding. Do you mean changing the codec on the timeline? For example, I double click the title on the timeline and leave the play head on the clip. Then go to Sequence/Settings and change the codec under the General tab? Or have I got it wrong?
If that is what you mean, I’ve tried it and it didn’t work. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong!

What he meant to say was, go to Sequence>>Settings and change the compressor to a 4:2:2 codec such as DV50, ProRes, or 8-bit uncompressed, then re-render the timeline.

Hi all,
David, that’s what I thought Rafael meant and the quality didn’t improve. However, when I changed the Field Dominance to ‘None’ the text looked a lot clearer and that was with the Compressor set to DV-PAL!
I then played my edited footage and it all played well until it hit a still image and then you noticed a problem with the picture. So I reset the Field Dominance settings back to Lower (Even) and of course my titles don’t look crisp and clear!
Your thoughts?

Render to a better quality codec in very helpful in post (Graphics, CC, effects rendering), however it can helps nothing with interlacing issues.
Is very important to know the correct field order of a clip before bringing it to a sequence. Most of all if you have not an interlaced monitor.
No much fun to discover that was something wrong after printing 25.000 DVDs:-)

It seems a way forward is to place my LiveType text on the timeline and change the Field Dominance to none in the sequence settings. But what can I do with the two freeze frames I have further along the timeline? Because of the change in FD the two stills now jitter!
Is there a way of getting around that problem?
