FCP settings for P2
I’m shooting P2 at 720p 24. What Sequence/Capture/Video Playback settings do I use in Audio/Video Settings or Easy Setup?
When I drag a clip onto my timeline, it changes the timeline to HDV…no matter what Capture setting I set it at. Is that normal? The playback out to my monitor only plays if I set Playback to 59.94. But then my Canvas window is out of sync. I know something is not set right.

720p24, or 720p 24PN? Big difference. 720p24 is 24 over 60, so you’d choose DVCPRO HD 720p60. But if you shot 24PN, then you shot 24 actual frames per second, so you’d use the DVCPRO HD 720p24 Easy Setup. Then you’ll be at 23.98.

What capture card do you have? Even if you shot 23.98, you need to view out at 720p 29.94 8-bit, as that is the compressor type of that format.
As for it converting to HDV…that makes ZERO sense.

We are shooting at 24 fps. I’m pretty sure we’re Native.
Whenever I check my Sequence Settings for my timeline after I put my P2 on it, it always says HDV.
Thanks for your help. I’ll keep working at it.

No. P2 is DVCPro HD or AVC-Intra. Are you using the Log and Transfer tool to bring the clips into FCP?

Yes, I go through Log and Transfer. No matter if I set my Capture to DVCPRO HD or other, when I drag my clip to the timeline, it asks me if I want to convert it to match. I click yes, and the clip goes on timeline. Then I check the Sequence Settings, and it always says HDV.
Are there other settings that I should be checking? Thanks. -
Log and Transfer is not looking at any of the capture settings at all. All it is doing is converting the mxf file structure into a QT file. The codec is not converted unless you are bring in AVC-Intra, RED or AVCHD, other then these the codec of the camera is retained.
What camera are you shoot on? What codec and frame rate are listed in the bin for the clips?

The camera I am using is a Panasonic P2 HD AJ-HPX2700G.
Viewfinder says 24P:24PN AVC-I100.The clips in my bin read – 1280×720 23.98fps Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 48KHz 16 bit Integer.
So does that mean that I am bringing in AVC-Intra?
I was wrong on my Sequence Settings. They say HDTV instead of HDV.

The footage you shot was AVCIntra. FCP doesn’t support that format natively, so it converts it to ProRes. Your clip settings and sequence settings will be ProRes. HDTV is just a frame size.

I wish people would stop calling this format P2. It’s not P2. P2 is a memory card format. The P2 card can shoot any number of formats, DV, DVCPRO HD, AVC Intra and anything else Panasonic dreams. The most commonly shot format on this card is DVCPRO HD, which is fact is not what you were shooting.

I could of sworn it was HDV last week. 🙂
So would it be easier to edit by changing my camera to DVCPRO HD? Is DVCPRO HD a lesser quality format than AVC-Intra?
You mentioned viewing Playback at 720p 29.94 8-bit. But I don’t have a setting for 29.94 at 720p. Just 23.98 or 59.94. Right now, it only plays out at 59.94. I’m using a Kona 3 card.

DVCPRO HD is an 8-bit codec. AVCIntra is a FAR SUPERIOR 10-bit codec. DVCPRO HD is 960×720 at 720p, and 1280×1080 at 1080i. AVCIntra is FULL RASTER HD…so again it wins.
DVCPRO HD import into FCP is lossless. No transcoding. AVCIntra does need to be transcoded to ProRes, but it is still a better codec. Only issue you have with that format is that you need more storage to edit it.
Pardon my typo…to view DVCPRO HD out you choose 720p 59.94 8-bit. But for ProRes you choose 720p59.94 10-bit. ProRes is always 10-bit.
