Import ProRes 422 into FCP 5?
Posted by Brad Froman on March 10, 2009 at 3:41 pmI was just given files saved as ProRes 422. I only have FCP 5…not 6…so am I screwed until I get them to re-save the files as something else?

March 11, 2009 at 3:45 amApple offers a free ProRes decoder to download. I doubt it will let you import it to FCP 5, but you can at least open it and convert it.
Also, the real ProRes Quicktime components that come with FCP 6 can be moved between systems as there is no copy protection or anything like that. I’m not condoning anything, just stating the facts.

September 11, 2009 at 11:41 amBut how does one do that?
I’m a FCP 5 user, but I need to be capturing and outputting in Apple ProRes… I have the install discs for FCP 6, but how do you install the Quicktime content without actually reinstalling FCP 6?
Any light you could shed would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!

Then you need to install and use FCP 6. You simply cannot do this with FCP 5. It wasn’t designed for it. You can’t just install the codec from the FCP 6 package and make it work. You need to upgrade to FCP 6…period.

September 11, 2009 at 1:52 pmI have FCP 5 and I was given the ProRes Codec by a friend. I dragged it into my folder and am now able to both import ProRes file as well as export a ProRes file with no problems.

November 14, 2009 at 4:55 amSimilar problem:
Was given pro res 422 files, (converts from red camera files) to edit in FCP5.
Tried to instal pro res decoder that you mentioned above,, but computer didn’t allowed me to do it.
Reason:
I already have a newer version instaled!?!?!?!?!?!🙂
I guess it was refering to qt player that I already have installed…
?!
Besides, I am completely confused what kind of settings for project and sequence to set? Obviously in fcp 5 menu there is no pro res 422 option?
And how to convert/export pro res 422 file from quick time player?
Anybody to help?
🙂

ProRes will not run under FCP5.
you will need to have the files converted to use on your system, working on software 3 versions back from a state of the art camera like Red is asking for issues.
Your Editing Software needs to be as current as your tapeless camera system is.
