Audio out of sync in FCP, re-sync’d manually, now out of snyc in DVD Studio Pro
I am capturing minidv into FCP via firewire with 16-bit audio and discovered that my audio is out of sync with the video. I wasn’t sure what settings to adjust to see if FCP was set up correctly, so i manually re-sync’d the audio by dragging it into sync, but when I compressed the file using Compressor and imported the assets into DVD Studio Pro, the audio is now out of sync again AND my fade in/fade out A/V transitions are no longer present! Very strange!
Any ideas?

It is possible the sample rate on your tape and your project settings do not match. Open up the browser and see what the sample rate of your audio is.
Sometimes it comes in at 32K if the camera was set up that way. If it is, change the sample rate of your project to match.

Thank you Chris. Not wanting to sound completely stupid, but how do I check this? What is the sample rate for MiniDV tape captured at 16-bit? Many thanks

The sample rate most common is 48k, but some cameras default to 32K. 16 bit is the depth which is fine and not as important as the rate matching.

Awesome Chris! So how would I go about changing the sample rate in FCP? Or even check it? I have already captured the footage so once I have changed it, I assume that I’ll after re-capture? Thank you for your help so far. I REALLY appreciate it.

Forgot to say, open the browser wide so you can see the sample rate of your clips.

In the browser window. Either open it up wide and/or scroll to the right hand side of it, it is a huge window. Near the end, you will see an “aud rate” heading and all your clips listed as either 48khz or 32Khz.

Excellent. Having discovered it, it says that it was captured at 48 khz. Do I need to change it? if so, how do I do that? The only way I found was in A/V Settings> A/V Devices> Playback Settings> Audio Output> Select BUILT-IN OUTPUT. It was currently set at 44100. Should I change this to 48000 and re-capture?

Just change the setting to 48khz. Don’t think you have to recapture anything.
