Largest Video Codec Capture to 3x 1TB internal MacPro Stripe
Hi there,
Apologies if this is badly worded.
What would be the Largest Video Codec that could be captured via FCP to 3x 1TB drives striped together internally in a MacPro?

What do you mean, with which codec you could make the longest capture?

I think what Im saying is wht data rate could I get from this set up, for example: could I capture 10bit uncompressed HD to it (Probably not, but as an example).

OK now I understand.
I’m not an expert at all about Raids but I think that with the appropriated video card and computer your HDs won’t have problem for capturing 10b Unc HD.
However I guess that this also will depends in the way you strype your Hds.

You are going to need a minimum of 5 striped drives in a SATA or fiber enclosure to capture and edit Uncompressed HD. Oh yeah, you’ll need a AJA or Kona card also.
We’re not talking about the highly compressed XDCAM EX here.

Thanks for your help! I was only looking for a rough Idea of the Maximum capabilities of an internal stripe one of these systems.

10-Bit ProRes (HQ) can be recorded to and played back from a single SATA drive. With 3 drives stripped as RAID 0 you could get several streams (at least 3) playing back as a multicam seq. Pro Res (HQ) has the largest bitrate of any of the compressed codec used in FCP.
Media drives need to be kept under 80% full or they start to suffer with dropped frame issues.

I’m able to capture, edit and play back a single stream of Uncompressed 1080i/60 without dropping frames using four internal SATA drives striped in RAID 0 (software RAID) in a Mac Pro. Boot drive is an external Firewire 800 drive. Not recommended for archiving or critical storage, however.

The new tech that makes these drives larger also makes them faster. So I’m willing to bet 3x 2TB drives will be fast enough for Uncompressed HD.
But in a critical environment you don’t want to even cut it close. The drives will slow down as they get fragmented. You’re much better of going with an external SATA enclosure with 6 disks or more if you want to use U/C HD.
If your clientele does not pay well enough for you to afford such a paltry expense, you shouldn’t be giving them U/C HD anyways. Use ProRes as others here just mentioned.
