Canon Capture in FCP not working
Thank you in advance for any helpful advice! I’ve done as much research as I can and now am stuck. I am a beginner operating FCP, and I cannot get Final Cut to capture clips and have them appear in the Bin (dont’ know if it’s camera related or a simple capture process error on my end).
I have HDV tape footage shot on the Canon XL-H1s, 23.98fps. I’m using the Canon HV20 as a deck to capture the footage in FCP (friend of mine says he has done this with success). I think the HV20 is 29.97 not sure but he says it’s all good (sorry if I’m wrong).
Trying to capture into Final Cut Pro 5.1 with the HV20 FireWired into my Powerbook G4. I’ve been told perhaps because this is an old version of FCP, this might be the issue. Under Easy Setup, research said to select “HDV – 1080i60 FireWire Basic.” This gives me the “VTR OK” message in FCP, and the HV20 is successfully linked with FCP – I can control camera from software. Footage plays nicely in preview window.
Here’s where the problem occurs – when I select “Capture Now” to do the entire tape, I give about 10 seconds preroll and the footage looks like it’s capturing (window comes up), however in the window it continuously says “Waiting for data from device” while the clip is playing. When I either stop the camera, or hit esc to stop capture, a message says “your footage was captured.” but NO clips appear in the bin, or in my scratch directories.
As well, when I log say a 2minute clip and select “Capture Batch,” it looks like it’s capturing… but doesn’t stop at the 2 minute duration mark – it just keeps capturing and capturing and I’m forced to abort. Maybe I’m not doing this right.
Either way, I can’t capture anything! I can get things into iMovie though so I have to assume it’s a FCP issue.. thanks very much!
