Time Code issues
Hello,
I am trying to capture footage from a tape shot on a busted camera. Unfortunately, the tape has odd and inconsistent time code- it registers while fast forwarding that the TC is there, but there are tons of breaks and glitches. As a result, when I digitize, the FCP has to stop and re-locate every 10 seconds or so. Is there a way to force it to import the footage. even if the time code isn’t registered properly? Then I could export on another tape and get the TC that way (OK, I lose a generation of quality, but I don’t mind).

Switch deck control to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE. Then you have to control the camera manually, but you can capture. And FCP will ignore the code on the tape…so after you capture, back this footage up somewhere, in case something happens to the main footage, like a drive failure.

Shane- thanks for the response. I am capturing with a Sony HVR deck- you are saying that I need to switch to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE on that deck, and then capture, or is UNCONTROLLED DEVICE a setting in FCP?

It is a setting in FCP…CAPTURE SETTINGS tab in the CAPTURE window.

As long as you don’t render in FC or export in QT, no generation lost.
