  • New Mac Pro Computer Monitor Question

This may be a strange question but here goes. I am about to order a new Mac Pro. I will use it only for Final Cut Studio. My plan was to pruchase 2 22″ computer monitors for my desktop (I will have a kona LHe for monitoring playback to yet another video monitor as usual). OK, now for the question. I was thinking, why not get one 32″ monitor for my desktop. This seems to make more sense because there will be two monitors separated by the frames (about 2″ in most cases)with the 2 monitor setup. However, the 2 setup is how I have been editing for the last 9 years (since my first Media 100 system) and it is the most common setup that I see when visiting other editing stations.

So, is there a downside to just using one large monitor as your desktop? Is this a stupid idea? I hope there is not something very obvious that I am forgeting, but I want to ask others who may have tried this setup to get their opinion. I will appreciate any feedback that I can get on this so my purchase will be a wise one.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I guess $500 is a good deal but how does this answer my question?

I use dual 23″ ACD’s in my studio, but occasionally work on a system that has a single 30″ ACD. I prefer the dual set-up hands down. I like having the second display to keep all my bins on, and perhaps a web browser up, and what-ever else I may need open. I find on-screen organization better on dualies. In the end, it comes down to personal preference.

If you are used to a dual screen setup, use it.

So it all comes down to preference. What I am hearing is that there is no technical reason to use dual screens over a single monitor. So the performance of the Mac will be effected equally when using one screen or two for displaying multiple applications at once. Good to know, I needed to make sure that there was no technical reason to use two monitors other than preference.

With the price of large (32″-42″) 1080P LCD monitors dropping rapidly, I suspected that a few editors might have made the move to editing on a large display. I was a little curious to hear a few opinions about what it was like in comparison to the traditional dual screen setup.
