It’s not up to the TV it’s up to the DVD player.

But yes a DVD player should play a 16:9 DVD on a 4:3 TV. It will just letterbox it and put black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Thank you so much! I have an m2v file that is 4:3 and in dvd studio pro it looks weird because the rest of my footage is 16:9 should i just re compress it in compressor?

This actually brings up a more complex problem i have a gripe about. When burning 16×9 footage in toast or DVDSP, it plays back great on a widescreen TV (provided the DVD and Tv are set properly) and computer monitor adjusts ratios automatically quite nicely.
But MOST (non widescreen) TV’s/DVD players from what i’ve experienced will NOT letterbox the image, it simply cuts off the edges and gives you a wrongly matted image. The only way to letterbox a 16×9 image is (to my knowledge) re-scaling and exporting the original image file in a non widescreen project setting, which sometimes doesn’t work with smooth results
