  • Blu Ray and the Mac…

Posted by Eric Johnson on February 4, 2009 at 8:34 pm

To start, this question is purely in relation to Blu Ray data discs and the associated drives.

Is there a quality read/write internal Blu Ray drive on the market that is 10.5.x compliant?

Now I know I could get this information somewhere else, but I’m more concerned with user experience of those doing similar work.

To that same end, is there more reliable Blu Ray media?

    Thanks for the help.

I bought the Lacie external. Works like a champ.

What’s funny is I just read a post from a guy who backing up to Flash drives instead of Blu-Ray discs. With the price dropping faster on Flash drives than Blu-ray media, sooner or later, it’s gonna’ be about the same!

Our unit is from FastMac. 18 months old and not a lick of trouble.

We’ve used Sony, TDK and Verbatim media. Haven’t have any issue with any of them.

I’ve been advised by a very knowledgeable person on this subject to not even attempt to install an internal SATA burner in the MacPro. His advice: Buy an external burner.

Why? It pops right in to the second Optical slot. I haven’t heard of anyone that I recommended that unit to having an issue.

    What reasons is he giving?

    Why would he advise against?

I’ve been using a SATA burner for almost 6 months and it works flawlessly.

Without any reason or explanation other than “a smart guy said no”, I’d be skeptical of such advice. Love to hear the logic behind this opinion.

Hmmm…I just remember him saying that it was a real struggle. I remember reading a tutorial somewhere also that said the same thing. Foe that reason, I’ve been looking at external burners. I’ve installed internal hard drives in my MacPro. Would you say that this is just as easy. I seem to recall there being some issues with the cables.???

The person who told me this was Bruce Nazarian who wrote the article, “Taming the Wild Blu Yonder,” which can be found on Ken Stone’s site.

I found the article. The only reason he states to go external is that some drives may be too large to fit. Nothing about quality or heat issues. Just size.
