    Need a check on workflow.

Working for a producer who is a fledgling shooter. I’ve agreed to produce a widescreen DVD for him of a product sales reel. He has shot several hours of footage. I’m guessing 8-16 hours, he’s not really sure.

His reel needs to have extra footage from DVDs he has supplied. I’m using MPEG stream clip to get his footage off. He also has music from mp3 files which I’m using compressor to switch to AIFF 48 khz.

He had to borrow his camera and give it back so I never got a good look at it. He told me earlier in the week (via text message) that he would be giving me MOV file in DV at 29.97 on a “server” that was coming off his camera. I dragged out of him that his camera is a consumer SONY 10.2 megapixel HD camera. I have concluded that it’s either the HDR-CX12 or HDR-CX7.

Comes time for me to get his footage and his “server” is a Seagate 500GB USB 2.0 drive. Huh. At this point, I made sure that a USB will be able to copy thru my Macbook Pro on to my 1 TB Firewire 400/800/esata drive in one piece. Comes over fine but all his files (and there’s a lot of em) are .modd files NOT .mov files. There are several files that appear to make up one file. Each file has a numeric naming convention like 200900112567.modd and it has a sister file that has the same numbers and a .m2ts extention. In some cases, there are 3 files: .modd, .m2ts and .moff.

Was hoping to use log and transfer to ingest these files but when I choose the folder, final cut says that the folder “contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media”. Rats. I have loaded the P2 driver and the AVC-Intra plug and, nope, log and transfer still not working.

I am using Voltaic HD to convert the files to the Apple Intermediate codec. It works fine but it’s slow.

Does anyone know how to get these files to work in log and transfer? When I convert my files using Voltaic, I am making Apple Intermediate codec files, 1920 X 1080 @ 29.97 fps 16bit stereo 48kHz. My plan is to rough cut these, then downconvert to DVCPRO50 854 X 480 to add my graphics in Final Cut Then use compressor to make the DVD. I’ll be using Ken Stone’s HD to SD timeline method.

I’m editing on a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel 2 GB ram. How crazy am I?

    Thanks all
