  Need to transfer digibeta to a firewire drive.
  Any recommendations for a facility that is competent and
  friendly to the freelancer?

  At the low end is SR Video Dubs. 212-977-9000. Nice guy, very accommodating, good service, not the most comprehensive or latest gear.

  A good step up is GRS. 212-286-0299. Also a good bunch of guys. Very up to date. Very comprehensive service.
