Just trying to see if anyone has tried to digitize to the new MBP using a 4pin to 9pin(FW800) connector (there are no FW400 connectors on new MBP). Going HDV to ProRez (same setting Capture ProRez 422, FW control)it works fine on my older MBP with a 4pin to 6pin cable, but as of yet not on the new systems.

    Anybody running into similar problem?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Although I haven’t personally tried this, there is no reason why it shouldn’t work. I have a friend with one of the new Macbook Pros and I advised him to purchase the cable, and since then he hasn’t told me of any problems that he’s been having. Of course, you won’t get the benefit of Firewire 800 since the other end still only has the 4 data pins for Firewire 400.

    Jim,

I was having some issues capturing, but after testing, it ended up being an issue with the camera. What are you loading from?

No reason it shouldn’t work, as all the signals are present. Here’s the pinouts of 4, 6 and 8 cables:

I’ve had a little more time to play with it this morning, and was able to get it to work, but it’s very finicky. First I tried HDV to ProRez on a Sony V1U and had no luck on the new MBP (the older Intel MBP worked fine with the same settings, same cable). Then I tried a Panny HVX200 in DV mode with no success until I started reinitializing both the camera and the program, finally I got a successful communication link.

I went back to the V1U and after a few ons and offs was able to get both straight HDV and HDV to ProRez, but this is something that I wouldn’t want to have to do under the gun 🙂

I agree that the pin configuration from 9 to 4 should not be a problem. However, since the new MBP has an I/O problem with the Express slot working with eSata (at present it seem that only the new Sonnet card works reliably), I was concerned.

I will keep playing with this to see if I can come up with a less fumbling work-flow, and get back to you.

Thanks, as always, for your prompt and reassuring feedback.

    Cheers,
