    Hi Mr Creativecow

It’s my first post in this website.
And i’m a french, so i’m sorry if i make some grammaticals mistakes.

I will edit a movie shoted with the arriflex D21 soon.

So i have some questions about the computer requirements, the workflow and the storage.

1-what’s the name of the arriflex files ? Is it Arriraw ?

    2-What computer requirements i need ?
I think worked on Mac Pro Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 4Go RAM. Is it a good choice ?
And i don’t know which graphic card i need.

3-For capturing “arriraw data”, have i need an Aja Kona 3 card ? or an other ?

4- What’s the “weight” of the arriflex files.

I hope somebody can answer me.

    Thanks a lot

    cordially

    Pit’

[jeremy Pitard] “1-what’s the name of the arriflex files ? Is it Arriraw ? “

The ARRIRaw capture from the D21 is fairly rare still- mostly you will get HDCAMSR tapes- there currently not a decoder for ARRIRaw for the FCP

    “2-What computer requirements i need ?

Without knowing what you are doing it is hard to determine- if you are working with D-21 RAW files that computer will BARELY handle the content. ( Been there, done that) Graphics cards only accelerate Motion etc. and do not effect playback.

“For capturing “arriraw data”, have i need an Aja Kona 3 card ? or an other ?”
the arri data files have to be captured on set using a Codex or Stwo solution to get to the RAW files.

You will need a Kona 3 card- the BMD cards will not cut it with a frame at almost a 3K rez in ARRIRaw.

“4- What’s the “weight” of the arriflex files. “

LARGE You will need storage able to handle more than 2K DPX size storage- or over 300MBps a second

This is not RED or DVCPROHD – these files are HUGE…

First thing to ask your production is what are they recording to. The more likely options are HDCAM-SR, as mentioned, and s.two DDR. In both cases you will need a matching player. The player for s.two d-mags is s.two iDock. It has HD-SDI output and RS-422 control. It does decent real time debayering so you don’t bother yourself with RAW. iDock also has an Ethernet connection so you can copy data an FCP compatible XML from the d-mag to your edit station. In RAW and 4:4:4 RGB modes it is 8 MB per frame so get plenty of storage.
