  • Audio Cracking in FCP during playback

Posted by Thomson Mathew on January 21, 2009 at 5:15 pm

    Hi,
There is one issue which we have come accross with MAC Pro system using AJA Kona 3 using Ciprico RAIDCore 5116 Storage. The issue is that during playback from FCP there is audio cracking noise.

    The system config:-
    Mac Pro 3.2 Ghz system.
    8GB Memory
    320GB SATA OS Drive
AJA Kona 3 (Installed in x4 Slot 4)tried installing in slot 3 also.
Ciprico RAIDCore Controller (Installed in x16 Slot 2)
Graphic Card (Installed in x16 Slot 1)
Ciprico Raid Core External 12TB Storage
    MAC OS 10.5.5
    QuickTime 7.5.5
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.5
AJA Kona 3 driver ver 6.0.2
Ciprico RAID Core Driver ver RC-500-2008168.1

Steps has taken to rectify the issue:-
    1. The Mac OS is reinstalled and all related application freshly.
    2. The driver is installed for RAID Core 5116 card and AJA Kona 3 card.
    3. The RAID 5 has been recreated and Storage shows no error in any of the Hard Drives.
    4. The DATA has been recaptured to confirm that there is no error in that file.

If we keep the system memory to 2GB the playback is fine but when we upgrade the memory to 4GB or 8GB the problem re-occurs.

Have you come accross this kind of issue?

Awaiting for your valuable reply asap.

Try swapping the Kona card and the Ciprico card. Give that a shot and see what happens.

If it is any help, I get crackling out of Kona 3 cards all the time. Different companies, different setups.
Flicking the output in the Kona control panel seems to fix it.

Also happen a LOT when cold

I had crackling in my Kona 3 card too. Called Kona and got a new card overnighted free. Had a bad card. The replacement card fixed the problem.

    Hi Wayne,

The Ciprico RAID Core card will work with either x16 or x8 slots. And the MAC Pro has 2 x16 and 2 x4 slots. The RAID Core has to be installed in slot 2 otherwise the storage will not detected.

    Hi Liam,

No. I am not using the MP3 files. I am using a fresh captured DV PAL & HD footages. Whenever you apply any Distort effect (i.e. fish eye, pond ripple, whirlpool & wave effects) on the timeline the video also has glitches during playback. Even if we restart the system and plays the timeline it plays for a while and then starts giving problem.

    Hi Peter,

Just to add to my first post if we don’t install the Kona 3 card in the system and then we play the timeline the same problem occurs from the inbuilt speakers of the system as well using DV PAL settings.

    Hi Ernie,

I have tried with a brand new card but the problem remains the same. I installed the OS, FCP, and the Drivers for the RAID Controller and AJA Kona3. But all this process didn’t help much.

Without AJA Kona 3 card in the system we used FCP with DV PAL but no luck. So, it is nothing to do with AJA or Storage. I think the problem is the combination of all this which is leading to this issue.

Is there anything else which I can try.

    Hi All,

Is there anyone who can help me on this. I really got stuck on this. The system works fine without any issues if it is 2GB of RAM.

We tried using another storage i.e. G-Speed FC external storage and it works fine with 8GB of RAM.

We are getting confused why the Ciprico RAID Core storage is working with 2GB of ram and when we upgrade that to 4GB or 8GB the audio cracking starts. Is it something to do with the three combination of MAC Pro, Ciprico RAID Core & AJA Kona 3.

We approached the One Stop Systems who has taken over the MediaVault from Ciprico. They are also trying a lot to help me but so far no positive reply.

    Appreciate your help asap.

    Best regards,

    Thomson Mathew
