• Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy

  split screen

  I want to do a split screen so it fills almost the whole frame. I usually shoot 4:3 and when I edit I scale the image down to about 43%. The images look too small. Any hints?

  Instead of scaling, you might try cropping unnecessary parts of the image instead. Does that make sense?

  Then I really have to plan it out when I shoot. Yes? Maybe make a template for the camera.
  Would you still shoot 4:3 or 16:9 (my camera has something called “squeeze mode”)

  That certainly never hurts… I’ve just always found that anytime i even think about doing splits, it always turns out that cropping works better, because everyone and everything stay larger, and you can still reposition them anywhere in the frame for composition and effect.

  Well, shooting 16×9 will give you more leeway when whittling down your splits. It’s almost, but not not quite like shooting HD for a an SD delivery, which allows you to zoom in on on people and objects to 300% because the the HD frame is so much bigger. Of course SD 16×9 doesn’t have nearly that much extra size.

  Hi David,
  I wanted you to know that it looks like it is going to work. I shot vertically in squeeze mode on my DVX100. After I did the cropping, I copied back to tape. With the tape back in the camera, I then made a mask with acetate to put in front of the screen.

  Very creative workflow Eileen, and I’m glad to help whenever I can.

  You really should write an article for the Cow on your technique, and include some pix. I’m sure others would dig it.
