HDV problem (progressive scan?)
Hey guys,
I’m editing a music video and I’m really worried about a problem.
We filmed it with a Sony Z1. When I captured the material, it used the current settings:
HDV 1080i50
1440 x 1880
25fps
and it’s field dominance it’s upper (Odd)So, when it previews on the final cut it looks beautiful, but once I finished editing and exported all using it’s current settings, some lines appear when there’s movement on the shot. I think it has something to do with progressive scan or like Interlace material…
I remember having the same problem on the PC using Adobe Premiere Pro, but I clicked on Field Dominance –> Always DeInterlace or something like that, and the lines disappeard on the final product.What should I do to erase those annoying lines and maintain a good quality?

nothing. you are seeing this on your monitor right?
leave it there. if you de-interlace you throw away resolution.
if you are monitoring this externally on a crt or tv through a decklink or aja card
it won’t be there. -
Well the thing is, I already made a DVD with the final product and the lines are still there…

are you watching it on your system or a set top player to a TV ?
MAC systems are notorious for having this issue. Be it final cut
program window or DVD playback. Doesn’t seem to be an issue on pc though. -
Well to be honest, I’ve watched it on a regular DVD player. I didn’t watched it on my PC though.

Sorry for double posting, but they are still there. The thing is we have to show this music video on a television, so if it plays fine on a PC doesn’t work for me :S

Are you trying have your finished product scan progressively? If so, you should do the interlace to progressive conversion in Compressor.

It is possible you have field dominance settings wrong in making the DVD. In PAL everything in upper field dominance except DV codec.
Unless we have some basic info about how you are making your DVD, we can only guess at this stage. Check your work flow from the sequence settings through to the DVD burn process. The field switch will be in there somewhere.
Deinterlacing seems to be the mantra to fixing this common issue but it is throwing away resolution and potentially creating motion artefacts on movement. Creating a progressive look is another issue but must be thought about before shooting, not after.

Well, to be totally honest, when I make the DVD, I just drag the final .mov and put it on Toast 9 and burn it…Toast let’s you choose what field dominance you want to use, and it was set as “automatic” so perhaps it uses the field dominance the file uses?
I’ll burn another DVD using the same field dominance that FCP shows me.

thats your problem right there.
if you want better quality dvd’s you’ll have to encode with compressor
and author with dvd studio pro.this will also give you higher play back compatibility.
