  • Capturing HDV to ProRes and file limits to 4GB and unreadable

Posted by Andy Davidson taylor on December 17, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I am capturing footage shot on in HDV on sony cameras (Z1U and HC9). I am capturing from HDV into ProRes for archive and editing purposes. The tape captures the footage on the tape and splits it into separate clips for each cut as expected. However, only 3 clips show up in the browser. All 7 show up in my capture file but 4 of the files (quicktime) are limited to 4 GB and when I try to open or import them into Final Cut Pro they say that they are not movie files.

I understand that the ProRes files will be very large. Why is it limiting to 4 GB? Can I change it? Can view the files I’ve already captured or do I need to recapture with different settings. Limit Capture/Export File Segment Size to: is not checked.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

What drives are you capturing to? How are the drives formatted? It could be your drives are too slow for Prores or formatted incorrectly which is limiting file size.

Capturing to a DROBO 4 TB USB2.0 Raid.

Drives are formatted for MS-DOS (FAT32) since they were used to tore other Windows NT data files.

    Thanks

[Andy Davidson Taylor] “Drives are formatted for MS-DOS (FAT32) “

And there is your problem. There is a 4GB file size limit with FAT32. Copy off any important files and reformat the drives to MacOS Extended.
