no audio on imported mpeg2
i imported an mpeg2 file into fcpro v6 and the audio does not play, and there is no audio tab in the viewer. however, when i play the clip from the desktop, the audio is there.
any ideas why the audio is not playing in fc pro?

It’s probably a muxed mpeg2 file. FCP won’t recongize the audio. Try using MPEG Streamclip to render to a different format or extract the audio.

most likely a Dolby audio track.
if it was PCM (.aif or .wav based) it would work.

thanks- upon further investigation it looks like it could be an mpeg2 muxed file. what would be the optimal format to re-format to ?

The MPG-2 with muxed audio contains MP1/layer2 audio, quite old fashioned and little efficient codec.
Try converting to any format that don’t need to be re-render in FC; Aiff or Wave with the default setting.

only european dvd players can playback mpeg1/layer 2 audio.
in the USA it can only be Dolby AC3 or PCM.

Thanks to all of you who have posted on this thread. i’m going to download mpeg streamclip and attempt to converr the file to a different format.

just wanted to report that clipstream worked great. i de-muxed the file and converted it. the new file imports and plays in fcp, video and audio (aiff). again, thanks to all for your posts.
