• Strange Vibration in Footage During Playback

Posted by Jason Pence on December 1, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Set-up:
HVX200
FCP 6

Hello all,

I’m in desperate need of a solution/ fix or any helpful suggestions. I just shot an interview in 24PN. I set up a couple of 1000W soft boxes to light the subject, black pipe and drape as the backdrop. It was a very quiet and controlled environment, the camera was zoomed into a fairly tight close up, the camera was  locked down, (no OIS on) and nothing noticeably wrong in the viewfinder. (during recording or during playback ).

Here’s problem…. After Log and Transfer and  during playback in the viewer, there seems to be a noticeable vibration in the footage. There was no shaking of the rooms floor, so there shouldn’t be any movement in the image at all.

Timeline set up:

Frame size: (960×720)(16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960×720)
Compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p60

I do not think the timeline set up is contributing to the problem,  because this “vibration” is noticeable in the viewer prior to dropping it into the timeline.

Is there any software that might remove the vibration or different settings in FCP that might at least minimize this issue?

Any help would be most graciously appreciated.

Many thanks,
Jason

Make sure that your field dominance settings are the same for both your source footage and timeline. Also, are you seeing this problem on an external reference monitor or only in the FCP interface?

Thanks, tried it, but to no avail.

Because I shot it in 24pn, I had orignialy set it up as:

Frame size: (960×720)(16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960×720)
Compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p60
Editing Time Base: 23.98

Do I have to set the editing time base at 24 or 23.98? Secondly, does Quicktime Compressor settings have to be set to DVCPRO HD 720p24 or DVCPRO HD 720p60? The second camera was also recorded in 24pn and it looked great when set to time line of:

Frame size: (960×720)(16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960×720)
Compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p60
Editing Time Base: 23.98

Very Confused????

Thanks,
Jason

Field dominance: both set to – None

This could not bee seen in the view finder on the camera, only on my editing LCD monitor. The second camera was set to the same settings, and it looks great on my editing monitor.

FYI… the OIS was not on while the camera was locked down and recording.

Thanks again,
Jason

Your setup sounds correct. If you use the DVDProHD 720p24 setup, the compressor is DVCProHD 720p60 and the editing timebase is 23.98.

I would try to disprove that your footage is recorded that way. I had a recent shot ruined by a nearby subwoofer. I could not see the vibration in the on-camera LCD or viewfinder, but it was definitely there on each bass note when played back on a larger monitor. I believe the vibration was transmitted through the floor and the tripod to the camera, even though I could not detect it during the shoot. Was this camera shooting at a longer focal length than the other?

Can you play the footage directly off of the P2 card to eliminate any post-production anomalies?

Final Cut Pro 6.0.5, Mac OS-X 10.5.5, Quicktime 7.5.5, Adobe Prod Prem CS4, G5 Quad 2.5, Kona-LHe V6, 8.5GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7800-GT 256MB, G-RAID 2x1TB FW800, 6TB RAID-5 (Enhance E8-ML, Highpoint 2322), Panasonic HVX-200P P2. Also MBP 17″ Core 2 Duo 2.5, 4GB, GeForce 8600M GT 512MB.

Hi Tom,

It was. The second camera was quite a bit closer than the camera footage I’m having issues with. When played back in the camera’s view finder the footage looks good and no vibration. Only when imported into FCP do the visual issues arise. The other cameras footage looks great in FCP so it leaves me scratching my head. Fortunately there were no loud sub woofers in the room, but maybe a machinery vibration reverbing in the floor? It was a hotel banquet room setting, the subject was on a riser and the camera zoom was pretty well maxed out. And too, both cameras were identically set. I tried FCP’s smooth cam and didn’t work, so I’m currently trying Lyric Media’s Stabilizer Plug-in and it seems to offer additional controls over the standard FCP smooth cam filter . Huge render times though. Unfortunately, this cannot be re-shot, it was a one time deal.

Sorry to hear about your footage, hopefully you were able to salvage some of it.

Do you have any experience using this stabilizing filters?

Best,
Jason

Is it possible to post a few seconds of this footage?

You bet. I’m uploading it to Vimeo right now. They said it’ll be 45 minutes before it’s converted. I’ll post the link as soon as they email me. Or I can email you the 25MB File.

Please check back – Crucial Assignment

5 Seconds of Footage.

24pn
OIS OFF
Locked down on a tripod
No room vibrations
Tight close up
New Camera
FCP 6.0.5

Sequence set to:

DVCPRO HD 760p60
Frame Size: (960×720) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960×720)

This seems to be a internal camera issue.

Secondly, I tried Smooth Cam, but didn’t have hours for analyzing. Tried Lyric Media Stabilizer but it kept crashing my system and there were no clear instructions for the settings.
Are you familiar with any of these stabilizing softwares?

Thanks so much!
Jason

You should post the 25Mb file to yousendit or something. It’s faster and no conversion necessary.

I have used Smoothcam and After Effects to stabilize footage.

I want to see it first.

There’s no way that I know of to have the footage physically altered in between the camera footage and log and transfer, it’s the exact same media so to speak. You are looking at this through an external video monitor and a video capture device such as a Kona?

Where can I sent you this clip. I’ll try sending over “yousendit.com”

I was only using the camera’s LCD viewer during the shoot and did not see anything strange, or while playing it back through the cameras viewfinder on site. It was only during Log and Transfer. I then checked the footage again on the cameras view finder and still nothing, only on my MBP. I also created a short clip to DVD, played it back on my TV monitor and…. still there.
