Live Capture Options
The situation is this; the company I work for currently provides live coverage and replays of greyhound racing that gets screened around the CCTV of the stadium. We currently run an analogue feed from the betacam into a DVCam deck (PAL), record the race, stop, rewind and run replays from that. This also allows us to run off DVDs of the races which people can buy on the night. This all works well and is cheap and cheerful.
However, we want to be able to achieve at least the same, preferably better efficiency by utilising a tapeless workflow. This is one way we could do it: feed an analogue signal into a Kona LHe (which we already have), and ‘Capture Now’ through FCP/Non Controllable Device to transcode to DV PAL. This would also require a reasonably fast RAID (which we also already have).
What I’d like to know is whether there is a simpler/more effective solution to this. Any software other than an NLE that will do it? What about firewire capture? Would we run the risk of dropping frames?

Hi Alex,
You can do it directly with QT Pro “New Movie Recorder”.
This way you can record DV from the FW or any other format from the AJA. With a Raid you wouldn’t have problem to record even ProRess.

Great answer Rafael, that’s much simpler. We also need to play out replays of what’s just been recorded. Is it possible to play something direct from Quicktime Pro out of a capture card, or do we need to bring it into FCP to do that?

the simplest method for you to use would be the FREE AJA capture utility called VTR Exchange, available on the AJA web site.
It is designed specifically to work with your Kona card and allows you to capture in any format and frame rate and type of compression that your card can handle.
I have worked with this app extensively for OnSet and Live capture situations around the world and it will work better than any other tool you are looking at.

Again the AJA tools offer the simplest solution.
VTR exchange does offer video playback- but for added comfort and ease of use why not look in the Applications> AJA Utilities folder for the Kona TV app that is installed with your cards driver software- just drop the file on the icon and it will play out the Video ports on the card.

Hi Gary,
Just another question that perhaps you can answer. Ideally what we’d like to do is integrate the use of a very simple graphics application (I’m talking Powerpoint simple) on the same computer that the operator can use to type up some results while the video replay is running.
I’ve just tested it, so I push ‘play’ on the file I’ve just recorded, then Apple+Tab to PP to quickly type some results in, which will then be outputted from the full screen slideshow mode in PP via a signal converter to our live monitor after the replay finishes. However, when I go into PP, AJAs default video output kicks in (in my case some colour bars) and the video playing in AJA TV or VTR Xchange pauses. Is there a way to keep the video playing out while the operator works in PP?
I tried the ‘hold last application’ option in the AJA Control Panel but that didn’t work and other than that I’m out of ideas.I hope that all makes sense.

nope.
By clicking to any non video app you are telling the computer to release the file, these are professional tools and they often do not like non video apps running at the same time.gary adcock
