DVCPro HD 720p 30 not ingesting via firewire.
I have DVCPro HD tape footage shot on three HDX900 cameras – all cameras were set for Free-Run Time Code (Time of Day) and Drop Frame. DF was used because of the time of day sync issue. I am reading that may have been a mistake. Yes/no?
We shot in: 720p 30 59.94 DF
I would like to ingest the DVCPro HD signal to FCP 6.0.5 via Firewire, but am unable to. I’m using a rental HD1400 deck connected via firewire. I am capturing to a CalDigit HDOne array via a newer Mac Pro Tower.
So far, I am able to:
– down convert to DV output (to test with & record in FCP) after setting deck’s menu #894 to DV.
– control the deck via firewire, am able to see the TC and control the deck.
– I get a Preview Disabled window when attempting to capture in the DVCPro HD presets. The deck can be controlled, but no video coming in.I am wondering if I should try to control the deck using RS422 instead of firewire control – in case that would matter.
In reading, I get mixed messages that FCP can/cannot ingest 720p 30 DF via firewire. If not, what are my options?
The images look great on the CRT attached to the video port – I just wish I could do something with them. 🙂
I have memorized the operation manual for the 1400 and have tried numerous settings on both it and FCP. I am so deep into this, I can’t tell which way is up anymore.
Thoughts anyone?

The DVCPROHD 720p 30 setting does indeed capture footage at 29.97 says so on the easy setup screen

Yes, I tried that Easy Setup as well as countless others. I went through the list one-by-one trying almost all of them.

I agree. That’s what it says, yet the Apple document I read says FCP does not support DF. I don’t know if that is still the case in v 6.0.5.
I suspect that Drop Frame is the issue since nothing else makes any sense. If it is, then I need to figure out a “Plan B” on how ti ingest the footage. Would some path using HD SDI work?

Don’t do that. It’s a really good way to screw up your preferences files. There is usually only one correct setting for your media. Check the manual for an explanation of each, but switching around and trying different ones, wrong ones and then failing in ingest will likely corrupt the prefs files. If you are going to use this technique of trial and error you should trash your prefs between each attempt.

if you can’t see video in your capture tool, with the settings you are using, then something somewhere is wrong, DF or NDF shouldn’t be an issue. you said you can see it downconverted…is the 1400 still setup to downconvert when trying to ingest HD? make sure you are sending HD out of the deck…is the output of the deck set to 720, not 1080? if your deck is setup to output correctly, and your FCP is setup to ingest correctly…and your capture preset is firewire…then try HDSDI and 422 control…
do you have a Kona or Blackmagic capture card or are you stuck with firewire only?

I tried it as a down convert and normal. The only way I got picture was down convert to DV or DV50.
720p – not 1080i was the output setting.
The SD HDI is probably my next path. Can I send HD SDI out from the 1400 and capture using DVCPro HD format in FCP – and recapture Time Code as NDF in FCP (in other words can I re-stripe the Time Code at time of ingest by using HD SDI through a card)?

Stuck – for the moment. I think that is about to change if it will solve the problem.
