Both, letterboxed and squeezed full frame clips in same project-issues
Posted by Brad Jenkins on November 26, 2008 at 6:42 pmIn the same project and timeline i have two types of clips. Most are letterboxed in the canvas and a few are full frame and squeezed. The timeline settings are, frame size=720×480 3:2 , pixel aspect ratio= ntsc-ccir601/dv with the anamorphic box NOT Checked. (If I check the anamorphic box, the squeezed clips look better, but then the letterboxed clips get squished vertically down. ive tried many variations to export just the squeezed clips properly but I always seem to get black bars on the “left and right” sides and still stretched up. FYI, im ending up on SD DVD

Brad,
The answer to your problems is not simple at this stage. As you have noticed, dealing with different formats and aspect ratios is a bit like a house of cards, if you make a mistake when setting up the project, one wrong move late in the game can make the whole deal come tumbling down. This is the problem you’re facing now. To solve your issues in an elegant way, you’ve got to decide precisely what you want to deliver, so, since you’ve mentioned that’s it’s a DVD, let’s start at the beginning with that in mind.
First, to get you back on track, let me ask, is there a reason you started this project in a 4×3 timeline? Please answer, as this is crucial to getting your project straightened out. The reason I ask is because most DVDs are created in wide-screen format, but are “flagged” to automatically display letterboxed on a 4×3 TV. Since you have wide-screen material in your project, I believe you most likely should have started with a timeline that was wide-screen, or anamorphic, as changing that after the fact creates lots of issues, but perhaps you have a reason I don’t know about. Do you?

November 27, 2008 at 2:35 amDavid, when i created a new project, I selected initially the dv ntsc anamorphic sequence preset. when i imported the files (not captured files) and dragged 1st one to timeline, i got a dialogue box that said sequence should be set to the same as my imported clips so i clicked yes to change the sequence settings. At that point I noticed the settings switched to dv – ccir 601, with the anamorphic box NOT checked. So i figured i should stay with that. The clips in the canvas are letterboxed in a 4×3 window at this point. The majority of the clips were like as just described. And as described earlier, i later put 2 different clips on the timeline that were stretched vertically full frame. this is when my problem started. Just so you know, the clips i imported were ripped with mac the ripper, then dvdxpro used to convert from the TS folder to QT files. These clips are for a demo reel, The person gets the run around when trying to get unprotected media. So this is what im stuck with. When i check the clip properties all of them say uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2 , ntsc ccir 601, and the anamorphic column is “Blank”
I also got the media performance warning of unoptimized media. I just clicked continue because i dont know what to do about that. So is there something I can do to remedy these issues. As you mentioned I would like it to play on widescreen tv’s as it should and be letterboxed on 4×3 tv’s.
Even if it means starting over, Im willing to do it. It’s only a 4 min. edit with a total of nine clips. Do you need any other info from me?Thanks David

November 27, 2008 at 3:17 amIt sounds to me Brad like you have some clips that are anamorphic, that for one reason or another aren’t properly flagged in FCP as being anamorphic, so when you dragged that first once in, it set your timeline to non-anamorphic, and then letterboxed all anamorphic media from there on.
Here’s what I would do…
First, look in the browser load clips into the viewer one by one until you locate a clip that looks squished horizontally in the viewer. Then look to the right in the browser and you’ll see that clip most likely does not have a check mark in the anamorphic column. If I’m right, put a check there, and that clip should immediately display properly in the viewer, and then I think I can help you to “put some lipstick on this pig,” as they say.
I’m heading out to buy some dog food right now, bnut if you report back on your findings I’ll be back within the hour and I’ll be happy to help you then.

November 27, 2008 at 4:05 amIm looking in the browser, scrolling to the right to look through the columns, and NONE of the clips have a check mark in the anamorphic column. Im assuming this is why I got the dialougue box that asked to change sequence settings to the same as the clips. Im getting confused 🙂 So does this mean that extracting the clips from the DVD ts folder somehow created this problem? How should i proceed?
thanks

Yes, I believe so…
[Brad Jenkins] “How should i proceed?”
Okay, let’s do a test…
1) Put a check in the anamorphic column of one clip that you believe should definitely be anamorphic.
2) Open a new timeline
3) Drag and drop that clip that you check marked anamorphic into the timeline and answer yes to when FCP asks to match the settings to the clip.
4) Report back here and tell me what you see.David Roth Weiss

November 27, 2008 at 4:25 amI clicked yes, and I see the clip is now squished together vertically and is ALSO letterboxed inside a 16×9 frame. Image looks distorted and pulled wide and squished down

Humm??? Strike that theory.
If you send me a few seconds of a clip I might be able to diagnose the issue. You can reach me at “drw at drw dot com”
