  • Media goes offline when restarting FCP

Posted by Brent Hannigan on November 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

There are 2 clips in my hour long timeline that will not stay connected to my media. I reconnect them and then when I restart FCP, they are offline – and when I click reveal in finder it says “Not Found”.

I even tried creating new master clips and reconnecting those, but it still happens.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

Do those clips have SmoothCam on them by chance?

No, they don’t. I am starting to think it has something to do with how they were originally imported. i.e. directly from the finder to the viewer.
It seems that FCP allows us to drag and drop everything so easily but it can lead to problems later on. In many ways we have to be much more organized and deliberate than with Avid. Just my opinion.

    [Brent Hannigan] “Just my opinion.”

That’s cool, but FCP does allow drag and drop.

What format are those clips and where did they originate?

Brent may have moved on but I have a similar problem where whole projects are repeatedly unlinked when I open them. 1080/30 and 1080/24 Prores 422HQ. It is really anoying. Any suggestions?

    I’m back.

My experience has been that clips, pics or music that are stored on an ethernet network do not always reattach themselves when I start up a FCP project. Even though I move everything locally, occasionally I get lazy and drag a jpeg or an mp3 directly from our server into the timeline or browser. Those clips sometimes lose their connection.
It also happens sometimes with clips stored locally. I reconnect the media, even make sure the clips names match the QT names, save the project, restart the computer and they are presto! offline.

I think the solution is to be extremely careful and organized with clips and bins and make sure everything is brought into the browser before editing. That’s all I can think of.
Does anyone else have this problem?

    Brent
