  • Has anyone captured 720p from HDCam on a film show? Problems.

We just started a film that’s being shot on 35mm, telecined to HDcam, captured using a Kona 3 to ProRes sq 720p23.98. When we compare the Cinema Tools data base (and the ALE too) to the burn in key numbers and timecode, we found that every clip is 1 frame off. All the 720p codecs are the same. All the 1080 codecs are fine, perfect. Just 720p doesn’t work. Is this a known issue? Help!!

    Alan-
not a bug,Physics of the conversion

Cross conversions on the Kona 3 card takes one frame to process, by creating a custom setup in FCP you can offset the capture to compensate for the delay offset.

Ah- and that’s where we are right now, but it’s not working. The offset works in one direction but when we put in the proper offset which is in the other direction, it just doesn’t react. We called AJA and they had us do a capture outside of FCP using their utility and it captured fine. FCP doesn’t seem to be able to make that adjustment in 720p codecs. 1080 codecs work perfectly fine, and that’s what’s weird. Called Apple and as usual, they don’t really understand the problem and no one higher in the food chain their has called back yet. Aaargh!
