    anyone ran into this?

I digitized a 1080i HDV tape (as hdv codec) for someone.

They try to play it in quicktime on their mac book
and they get audio but a white screen for video
like they don’t have the codec.

they have the latest quicktime, iMovie HD and Final Cut Express.

I thought iMovie at least could read HDV?

    UPDATE:
I’m seeing “how to” screens and notice that for these
apps its actually the AIC apple intermediate codec they
are using with HDV only has device control.

maybe for lower-end machines that can’t crunch HDV like
    the big machines can.

You got it. Native HDV support only works in FCP…and I thought FCE. iMovie capture as AIC…does FCE too?

Always capture your footaqe in the application you intend to edit it with.

He copied the quicktime.hdv.component then quicktime could see them just
fine and imovieHD, but it transcoded on import to AIC.

Final Cut Express only has setups for DV and AIC.

I’ve done a lot of capturing of HDV and DV and uncompressed for folks
and it was never a problem until now, but I learned something for sure. 🙂
