How to work with proxys or offline in FCP
Posted by Felix Frank on November 12, 2008 at 3:38 pmHi there,
I will shoot next week with the HD Cam 650 from Sony.
As I know it will be extremely slow to work with in Final Cut.
From After Effects I know that you can make proxys from the original HD clip and work than with the lower resolution video that makes reference to the HD clip.
How to do this in Final Cut?
I think there its called work offline but i don’t get the point.thank in advance for your help

November 12, 2008 at 4:51 pmYou would have to either capture at lower resolution (DVCPRO HD or OFFLINE RT) and then recapture the footage when you have locked the cut. That is one option:

Or you can capture your footage at full resolution, then create offline quality files to work with, then reconnect to the full versions later…I outline how to to that in an article I wrote for this magazine:

November 12, 2008 at 5:06 pmIf you are capturing via a capture card, try capturing to ProRes. Those files will be a lot smaller than uncompressed 10bit HD, and you’ll be working in a format that you could, if you wished, use as your online format. If you need the added quality of uncompressed for finishing then you can re-capture to that after your offline. If that’s the route you plan to go, then look up Media Manager in the FCP manual and on this forum.
Good luck,

November 12, 2008 at 7:12 pmHey again,
I see things clearer now but still don’t understand exactly the workflow.
I capture in Full HD and make it with the media manager offline as a .jpeg sequence.Than I open the shots I need in Boujou make the 3D tracking.
Go to Maya render with the tracked camera my 3D Toons.
Composite in After Effects the effects, particles and so on and render this out with alpha but without the video layer
Then bring it back to final cut, put my 3D on the top layer and hope once the Video is online in Full HD that everything is on the right place???Think its a bit risky, no???

November 12, 2008 at 7:21 pmWhoa…hold on. That is your workflow? The methods I linked to are not meant for that…they are meant for offline CREATIVE editing. You are doing a lot of compositing, and that won’t work with either method. because the pixel dimensions are completely different.
Sorry, I don’t know how to do what you want…proxies that are full pixel dimension. Not my area of work.

November 14, 2008 at 2:21 pmHey there,
Does anybody know how I can work offline but maintain the same pixel dimensions or the same image size so that my tracked 3d will stay in place in i put my video footage online.
