FCP6 RT Menu missing options and everything added to timeline needs rendering (red bar)
Hi,
I need help please!! I have been editing regularly with Final Cut Pro 6 since December last year on my mac with no problems. All of a sudden, when I try to add anything to my timeline, QT movies, Captured Footage, Images, anything the red render bar appears. When I click on the RT dropdown menu all the regular options are missing. Just “use playback settings” and “Full quality” appear. Another little glitch which has started is when I try to render certain QT movies (5-10sec worth) the clip analysis window pops up, even though there is now filters on the clip and the analysis time just gets longer and longer. I have used the easy setup for DV Pal.
I hoping someone out there has a clue what is going on.

Check item properties for the sequence and for the clips you’re using. What exactly does it say for each? What differences are there?

Thanks for your response. All the clips are pretty similar in items properties, they are 4 in total so far and they are as follows;
Video Rate – all 25fps
Frame Size – all 720×576
Compressor – Animation, DV-Pal, H.264 and Animation
Data Rate – 20.6MB/G, 3.6. 1.1 and 3.3
Pixel Aspect – all Pal CCIR601
Field Dom – Upper, Lower, Upper/odd and Upper OddAs for the Sequence Item Properties:
Video Rate – 25fps
Frame Size – 720×576
Compressor – H.264
Pixel Aspect – Pal CCIR601
Field Dom – Upper Odd
Audio – 2 Outputs
Audio Rate – 48 KHz
Audio Format – 32-bit Floating PointSo as I read it the differences are the Compressor, Data Rate and
Field Dominance. I don’t know what this means though. I’ve completed the Apple Certified Pro course and I am at a loss? It is obviously something to do with the clips being different, they were all created by me in FCP6 and exported as Quicktime movies, so I don’t know why they aren’t combatible, when I re-import them.Kind regards,

Thats the problem Loretta, H.264 is not an FCP native sequence format. Your earlier posts suggest that you intended to be working in a DV PAL sequence format but clearly this sequence is H.264.
Go to your Easy Setup menu and reselect DV PAL, then create a New Sequence … open that new sequence and try editing your source footage into that … does it work any better?Worth noting also is that some of your source clips are using the Animation codec and some using H264, so those clips will certainly need to be rendered in your DV PAL timeline, but overall, you should see things return to normality.
Its likely that when you began editing this project, the first clip you dropped in the timeline was encoded as H264 … and so FCP offered to change the timeline format to suit the source clip, to which you agreed. You should be careful that you always understand any warning message that FCP gives you. If you just ignore them you can end up in an unexpected pickle that can be tricky to resolve.

Ok, great, thanks for that!
I was playing around with it this afternoon and realised when I clicked ok to the warning the problems started. Creating a new sequence does put things back to normal. But like you said I do have to render the clips that conflict with the setting.
I really appreciate your prompt and informative help. It is very stressful when you have a problem and you don’t have anyone that can help and you’ve hit a brick wall. This forum has helped me so my times I can’t count them all, this was the first time I posted a question and was so impressed with your quick and helpful responses.

I am now having the same problem
I don’t understand when you say “H.264 is not an FCP native sequence format”. In the past, I have been able to add a 720×1080 24p H.264 clip to a new sequence and have it play back in the sequence window with audio. Now all of the sudden, the video will playback, but the audio needs rendering. This happens even if I create a new sequence and match the settings to the clip.
I can not get anything to playback without rendering the audio anymore.

I would also like to add that I get the same result with .dv PAL 25 fps footage as well.

H.264 is a an interframe compression codec that was created for delivery not as a production format. H.264 should never be used in production. Material shot using this codec should be converted on ingest or in third party software.
This is a video codec and should not affect the audio rendering. You will need to give full specifications of the audio, sample rate, codec, etc, format of sequence, number of tracks, etc. Maybe you should give the full specs for the sequence as Loretta did.
