HDV works – but HDV from AE does not
Helping out a friend who wanted to learn how to do something in After Effects, I came across a situation that I’ve never seen.
I’ve avoided editing in HDV within FCP – always transcoded to DVCPro or even DV. But my friend wants to edit HDV.
His HDV camera shots play just fine, but when I made an HDV file in After Effects, it played back very jerkily in FCP. In AE I’m using the standard HDV render setting. The properties (data rates, fields, pixel dimensions) for both his camera originals and my AE HDV files seem quite similar, but the performance isn’t.
Is there some special trick when rendering in the HDV codec in AE for FCP?

My friend is adamant about using HDV in FCP. My work-around: render out of AE in HDV or DVCProHD, import to FCP, render again to make it playable, export a QT HDV movie. The end result plays fine.
btw — he’s using a laptop – does he have any alternatives for an editing codec? He has no auxiliary input device.
I have a MacBook Pro with a Kona LHe, so I have managed to avoid HDV as an editing codec, which makes me unable to advise him.

If your friend thinks there’s an advantage, ANY advantage, to do any kind of manipulation with the HDV codec, then I have a bridge to sell him. He’s off his rocker or exceedingly ill-informed.
As David says, ProRes.

I’m not arguing with you about editing HDV; I told him the same thing. I appreciate the advice on how to deal with someone who has already done all his captures and has to deal with HDV. I’ll let him know that he should use ProRes in the future.
