  external drive scratch disk problem

  Hello, can anyone help please?

  Set up – imac, final cut pro, 500gb maxtor external drive which has been formated for mac and used with time machine. USB only though but should still work?

  Problem – When I go to set up the external drive in the scratch disk window I get this message
  “unable to set scratch disk. access to that drive has been denied or failed”.

  I do not understand why this is happening? The disk is not protected or if it is how do I unprotect it?

  FCP is working fine with camera, firewire and my internal hard drive but really want to use this external drive.

  Get a separate external drive. Don’t use Time Machine disk for a scratch disk. My guess is Time Machine is not letting FCP use the disk. Capturing is disk intensive. Capturing while Time machine is doing its thing is sure to drop frames.

  Thanks Warren, that makes sense. Did think about that, oh well.

  Think i’ll keep that drive for time machine back up and buy a 500gb firewire drive for final cut pro media.

  Make sure your drive is FIREWIRE. Never use USB as a scratch disc. You will get unexpected results.
