When Edit to Tape or Export the 2 stereo channels are MONO
I am using Final Cut Pro 6 and trying to capture from digibeta and then make a clone and have the stereo (2 channels)be identical to the Master.
Final cut has no problem capturing the audio in stereo (I can view the two different channels in the audio mixer) but when I try and export a quicktime from the sequence or edit to tape the 2 channels show up identical (mono) – they look exactly the same unlike on the master.
I am using AJA Kona LHe 29.97 720×486. Can someone please help me with this or give me some direction?
This issue brought me to tears tonight. I would love to resolve it.

I’m not in front of FCP right now (first time in 12 hours today…) so pardon me if this is a little vague…
Check your clip’s audio in the viewer – how is the panning set? Do you have a stereo pair, or dual mono tracks?
My guess is that ingested your tape as dual mono tracks, and when you print back to tape, both channels are panned center.

I don’t quite follow the panning issue. How can I test this? And do you mean that there may be some setting that is on the Digibeta deck when I blacken the tape that causes it to be Mono?
In FCP I tried edit to tape with stereo pair and and with dual mono tracks and there was no difference. I also tried to export a quicktime from the sequence using both techniques and it was still mono. The only time I can get the real stereo tracks exported is if I do them one at a time but turning of Audio track 1 and exporting and AIFF file and then doing the other track 2 the same way and then importing them both again.
Do you know why this may be happening?

Open the clip that you have ingested in the viewer. Are there two Mono tabs, or one Stereo (a1a2) tab?
What is the value for the “Pan” parameter?

When the two tracks are linked and a stereo pair or mono and I double click on them the Level is at 0dB and the Pan is at -1. Is this correct?

f.y.i. I have actually tried editing to tape both ways (dual mono and stereo)

I figure it out. So you have to set pan to 0 not -1 .

I actually may be having a problem with a bug in the application. When I edited to tape a second time with the PAN slider all the way to -1 in a stereo pair I was able to see stereo on the digibeta deck. I can’t explain it. I guess final cut jst didn’t feel like giving me stereo yesterday.
