  • color correction help for NFL Highlight tape

I work with the Jacksonville Jaguars. I am the person who does all of their highlight tapes. I am working on a project for our upcoming game against the browns. I am using an iron man them. I have all the clips i want from the movie and our last game. The task i need help with is taking the red on iron man’s suite and turning it teal. I can do it on a freeze frame with color correction and also by lowering the saturation and bringing the colors out. But i really do not want to lower the saturation to accomplish my task. Can anyone please help me. I have tried the 8 point garbage matte but i noticed that i would have to have move the matte every few frames. Is there any easier way to accomplish my task of taking the red in iron man’s suite and making it teal?

It’s possible, do a google search for secondary color correction.
    thats the ticket.

This is done fairly easily in Color. You would use a vignette & a key in the secondaries to do it. You would probably need to keyframe the vignette, but it would be much easier than using the garbage matte in FCP.

You can also use the matte generators in FCP to create a simple soft oval travel matte, and use that instead of the garbage matte.

It’s called rotoscoping. You use after effects, shake, combustion or (ulp) Motion to do this. It’s very specialized in that you have to make a matte much more specialized than the FCP 8 pt. Garbage Matte.

If you want it done by Sunday, you probably should farm this job out to a specialist.

this could easily be done with secondary color correction.

no garbage masks or roto required.

You do have more control if the subject is matted though, no?

    possibly.

if you are doing secondary color correction to change a color
on screen and you have the iron man in red and he is next to
something that is also red, then you would have to roto that section for sure
unless it didn’t matter that the red object was also color changed.

It’s nearly the same process as the fad to have everything in
black and white but have an item or two in color (sin city for example)

[Kevin Monahan] “You do have more control if the subject is matted though, no?”

Yup. That’s why I suggested using Color with a vignette.

It’s possible to do something similar in FCP with Magic Bullet Colorista, or even with FCP’s native 3-way or 2-way. What I’ve done in the past with FCP’s native CC tools is use a travel matte to isolate the area I wanted to work on.

Yeah, but I can see the problems already. Fans wear the same colored jerseys as the players, so I don’t think a vignette would be good enough. This sounds like a roto and then a secondary color correction job. IMHO.

Thanks for your help. I do not have to have this done for a week or two. The problem i need to get around is not about the fans, but when changing the red in Starks suit it also affects the red in his face. One of the parts we are using is where he is putting on the suit and the faceplate shuts down. It is a good close up. Also to use a roto do we need to get another program or is it possible to do that in FCP. The reason I am asking is we have to tried this idea before and i just want to get all the information before spending a bunch of time and not get any where. Thanks again for your help.

roto in a proper compositing app like: motion, after effects, shake etc…
